Guess I'd better get to work on my housing so I can compare my DIY to what will surely have a demo by Andy at PGS.

Sure, but it looks super cool And compared to the NuFuzz from Ed Sanner this is a steal. Hope it sounds as good.

An Ashbass costs $50 cheaper and sounds virtually identical to an original. I've A/B'd them extensively. I'm really surprised most fuzz freaks around here aren't all over the Ashbass. I'm sure the Catalinbread nails the sound as well, but as Ludobag said, it's such a simple, low parts count circuit, that $150 seems a little steep. Then of course there's always the Ennio, made by a forum member, whom we should all be supporting.
By the way, I think the write up in the ad is wrong. The Fuzzrite wasn't released until 66 or 67, so there's no way it's used on "2000 pound bee".

I have high hopes these guys will have a good result... Very good designers. To date, any remakes I have heard are not even close in comparable sound, and majorly fall short in how they Act.
Here's a taste of my germanium FUZZRITE:

This isn't my video, but here's someone comparing a Fuzzbrite and Fuzzrite. Judge for yourselves. The only real difference I can discern from my own tests is that the original is slightly fizzier and phased out sounding, in an unperdictable sort of way. I guess you could say ruder - but minimally so.

This Catalinbread fuzz is silicon based. It would be unfair IMO comparing it to Germanium ones. Each is it's own category. The marketing copy does make some bold claims though. I'm with Lodobag and Psychonaut, the original circuit is simple enough, plenty of copies and DIY options are already in the market. I wonder what value it adds, if it's meant to be like the original. And if not - plenty of modified circuits as well. Catalinbread has a good name and do make excellent pedals. Looks like they're cashing in on their surge of popularity, and releasing everything...
Nice enclosure. It's plastic, you know. Graphics is better than any of their latest creations. Seems like they can't find a common branding, the designs are all over the place...
I do think it's overpriced. OTH, most pedals are. Since I got my Hakko 888 I don't look back...
And when will everybody finally adapt top-mounted jacks?

Suppossedly there were only 200 germanium Fuzzrites made, so probably the sound most people are used to hearing are the silicone versions that are way more plentiful. One huge drawback with germaniums, and probably why they changed to silicone, is that they're very temperature sensitve and don't work well when they're cold. When I try to use my Maestro Fuzztone in the winter it makes almost no fuzz, but if I heat it up for a few minutes in front of a space heater it sounds great. That's why a lot of boutique germanium fuzzes have a bias control built in.

One thing that's interesting about my Fuzzrite is that when you are not playing, it's completely silent. silent even when the "Attack" is fully on. Somebody told me it's like a Class C design. Input signal turns it on. Bias? Not sure.

Very good point, the Ashbass is great!
I also have VerbaFuzz that I bought from Rory of the Infrareds a long time ago that I love, so I really have no use for this anyway. But I'll be curious to hear how it sounds.

I have a VerbaFuzz, too... with a Mutron Octave Divider = instant "Birthday", by the Beatles.

Okay, order canceled. Thanks guys! Who's willing to put a nice germanium fuzz together for me or point me in the direction of a useful kit?! I am totally after that Fuzzrite sound, but the Ashbass pedals are simply (almost) unavailable in the EU....

Thanks for posting this. I hear no difference whatsoever, however, my ears are not the youngest. We also don't know if that is a germanium Fuzzrite. I imagine that some very experienced ears will hear a difference but not the general audience. -Marty

I should say that I have no experience with Catalinbread effects and don't know what this one sounds like.
