trad nazis seem to often focus heavily on instruments and often overlook the actual music, which is why i brought it up.

In that case I am a trad nazi although I'm not a huge fan of many of the first wave bands. I think it is more of the sound of the first wave that trad nazis focus on.

That's like saying I'm a midget even though I'm 5'9.

Not a huge fan in comparison to the modern trad sounding bands and the rest of the third wave bands such as the Pilgrims, Man or Astro-Man, Penetrators, or Space Cossacks.
I'm not saying "not a huge fan" in the case of "I'm not a huge Genesis fan".

I think Jake meant that there are people who use the trad nazi remark whenever someone says they dont like their band:
person A: "I don't like your band"
person B "Oh shut up, you're such a trad nazi!"
but who knows, Jake has a very complex mind and masters the enigmatic post like no one else
I understand DGG's concern, I dont think it's that bad and the word has lost it's connotation in the 'trad nazi' remark, but still. there could well be some first wavers who lost a dad, granddad or uncle on the Normandy beaches in '44, so yeah, there could be situations where it would be awkward to say the least to call people 'trad. nazi.'

Trad-Zealot actually says it better than Trad-Nazi, but isn't as "flashy". How about Trad-Taliban?
I also routinely ignore every 3rd or 4th post from Jake as he is either joking or being too inscrutably enigmatic for me. When I post things like that bad things happen.

I could be wrong, but I think trad-Nazi came out because of the "soup-Nazi" episode of Seinfeld. It refers to someone that is so focused on on aspect of life, in this case a guy who only is interested in his soup, that everything and everyone else is secondary. In the case of Trad-Nazi, they are so focused on the look and sound not being 100% period correct, that they miss out on the experience of a newer surf sound or look.
Bands like Satan's Pilgrims, etc aren't trad, but they are the logical step from trad. SP's sounds and songs pay a certain reverence to the 1st wave bands.
I understood Jakes reference - it's like asking a girl out, getting turned down, and then declairing " she must be a lesbian!"

I'm gonna go sorta old school and say:
-The Woodies
-Jon and the Nightriders
Maybe not really trad by some of today's more discriminating trad nazi, but in there times they were more trad than anything else out there.
I also really dig the Volcanics. When they mix in the frat vocals it's very reminiscent of the Sentinals or the Pyramids.

What about 'Surf Snob'? or is that too broad?
I thought 'Trad-nazi' was a mythological creature like a 'Mermaid', do they actually really exist?

To various degrees, but I think the term is mainly just bandied about in a joking fashion, as in "You better not use that Crate power block/Flying V/Hawaiin shirt because the trad-Nazi's will come knocking on your door in the middle of the night".

Thats cool...I saw a mermaid once out on the chespeake bay, scared the crap out of me! We were fishing from a boat for about an hour getting baked and tossed around (the bay can be more rough then the ocean) and all of a sudden out of the corner of my eye I see what looks like a big orange baby head swimming in the water, then it disapeared. Then it was back, and as I stared at it it was a big orange baby head, freaking crazy! (turns out later we saw it closer and it was a sea turtle)
But man for like 2 minutes I saw a big orange baby head swimming around.
I figure trad nazi's are like big orange baby heads, but when you get a good look at them theyre just not.

I think that's a good way of putting it. The trad nazis, living in their mythological underwater caves or wherever, are indeed missing out.

This debate is kind of silly because I really don't think there is any such thing as a full on traditional surf nazi. Reading some of these definitions given for what a trad nazi is I think it would be totally impossible in today's modern world to live up to these standards!

Well also realize that trad-Nazi is a perjorative term that is often thrown upon people who genuinely don't like modern or other non-60's influences in their surf music. The so-called "trad-Nazis" could just as easily make up a nasty word for those that do. It is not a helpful word at all, really.

funny stuff. I forgot about the soup nazi episode. too funny.
anyway, I see surf nazi used in two ways: jokingly as said before, and to describe the people who say "it aint surf if it isn't 110% period correct 61-63" ... it has more to do with the word then the music, though the value judgement is enormous in all it's implicitness. I remeber a post a while ago, not sure who it was, that said something like "let's keep the genre pure". kinda silly, given how words are used and evolve in general, and also a conception of art I don't quite get. "yo, Vince, quit smearing that paint across those sunflowers, let's keep the art of painting pure"
anyway, I dont think we have many people like that here, I saw a few on cowabunga years ago, I seem to remember.
one thing, since it's been brought up a few times last week or so, I dont think everyone who likes to wear suits or loves talking about vintage gear necessarily also is a trad nazi or even prefers trad music in general, or trad appearance or whatever. it's usually a matter of if you want to look/ sound trad, what do you do.... I think I would be the prime example of that, in fact I love 1st wave trad bands, but my favorite current bands are mostly bands that to some or more degree are doing something new. go figure. Ive also stated a few times that Ive heard surfbands get a great tone with an SG. go figure some more.

To me, it's all good regardless of the "wave." Some is just better than others. For various reasons, some bands stand out.

Some bands are just 'soundogenic', like some faces are photogenic. Many different factors may contribute to being soundogenic, but regardless - you know it when you hear it.
