Nice Sancho!
Not only the reverb test but also for the ear blind test. Although never tryed the Strymon I would say B is the Boss pedal and D is the Strymon flint. I would say that the Strymon seems to be closer to those which have a real pan, in contrast with the Boss. From those wich I think they have reverb pan, I would choose C and then E.
Good job!

don't know really who are the them ?
but the B is my least favorite

for me the E is the Frv1
B Strymon
A Gomez
C Surfy bear
D Ri

I'm glad you posted this. I thought the Dwell on the tube units had to be pretty near the top. Tone a lil on the dim side too - interesting. I'll have to take another listen knowing this stuff now. Smile

Now I also know why you like the MOD pan, cause you can't really hear the tail that much with this tone setting Very Happy

People have been making a big deal about the 'tail' recently but people tend to swap the pan before trying the settings...

I think the results will tell me that I don't know squat! Smile

Boy, that was quite a challenge!
Thank you Sancho for all this fantastic work!
Here's my guess:

A Gomez
B Flint
C RI
D Surfy Bear
E Boss FRV-1

Cheers

Hi!
I don't know the Gomez and the Surfy Bear. I would guess that A is the Flint and E is the FRV-1 ...

I compared in immediate succession A1,B1,C1,D1,and E1 and repeated the process for those tracks a few times. They all sound purdy good although B1 wasn't giving much dwell on the melody notes - that may be due to the setting. I preferred the sound of A1 and C1 overall but not by any great measure. -Marty
PS - thanks for setting up this excellent blindfold comparison, Kilian!

Very interesting.

Gotta say that "A" was the one that most appealed to me. How much that depends on 1) its settings and 2) how similar it is to what what experience has tuned my ear to desire I cannot say.

Looking forward to hearing what was what!

Still rockin' after all these years!

I'm sticking with my 2 cards like a (loser...) man. It's really hard though, pans are so different even from the same manufacturer.

Thanks for the nice comments, folks! I'm glad you all enjoy this and we can do a little quizzy with reverbs Wink

Some of you will be totally stunned by the results! But as I've mentioned already, this comparison does not show the reverbs performance in a band situation. That's something totally different. Personally I do hit my pan with a booster (which I didn't in the recordings) and I don't play a Jag with 12s (prefer the Mosrite/Hallmark sound when playing live).

A short comment regarding the setup: I usually play a part on the higher notes, like the 2nd part of 'Ali Baba' or '02' in the recordings. I try to find a balance between ice-picking and drip. Set up the dwell high, to get a good amount of drip, then the mix up to the point where the reverb starts to become '3D' and finally the tone knob against the icepicking up to the 'sweet spot'. If you do it like this and you go back to the lower strings (while keeping those settings) and you still get a nice drip when playing palm muted, you basically have a nicely set up reverb sound, IMO.
To be honest, finding the 'best setting' was quite easy on the RI and the G-Spring. The Surfy Bear and Flint were a little harder to tame and the FRV-1 was a nightmare Yes

I decided to reveal the result in a video, as soon as I find the time. A quick question: Would you prefer to hear the samples in the video in the order of: A1, B1, C1, D1, E1, A2, B2, C2, etc. or A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, B1, B2, B3, etc.? What do you think would display the differences more precisely?

The first option, I think, would let folks isolate the difference easier than bouncing back & forth. Great quiz; much fun.

Started making a video. Need to take some pics of all the units, otherwise it will be a very boring video to watch Wink Stay tuned.

After all this testing and comparing, all I can say when I hear a dry guitar is:
