u2 vs 63, huh?

The u2's look so basic, what makes them 'good' so to speak?

What about this??? 12 strings and an F-hole!

The DC's are my least favorite old or reissue.
The bridge pickup is too close to the bridge so you have very low output when used by itself and the overtones are the least pleasing of the bunch.
Most people just use the two pickups together because they are in series but I find that to be rather limiting.

I think your observations are correct, but no more so IMO for a DC59 than for a Jag or a Strat. I rarely use the bridge PU by itself on those either and for just the reason you mention. There have been others, however, who used all three effectively.

One example is Danny Kalb with the Blues Project. For instance on their hard rocker "Wake Me, Shake Me." (Listen to how the Dano's treble leads allow him to cut through Al Kooper's organ!)

OTOH, the neck PU allows for a great chuff chuff rhythm. Between that and the two together I find the DC59 a sweet, sweet ax. So light. So funky! Very Happy

You can't go wrong with either and people certainly make great music with all the models but after owning many I find the U2's and the 63's (1457 or 1449 originally) to sound the most pleasing, the most versatile.

As far as pickup placement I'm just comparing Danos.
If you did compare bridge pickup placement on a DC vs. a Jag or Strat though you'd find that the DC's bridge pickup placement is in fact closest to the bridge of those guitar models

Oh, and here's another guitarist who used one to good effect. Very Happy Alas, despite the tropical setting he was known to say that he never wanted to hear surf music again.

Jimi with a Dano!

I have the Seymour Duncan lipsticks installed on the Strat seen below. I'm not as happy with the pickups as others here are 'cause they have a lower output. I keep 'em on this guitar anyways 'cause they look cool and as we know, it is better that the guitar look good than be good. Cool Marty
