Does anybody actually use the search feature? Smile

Or the quick search when you create a new topic?

I tried them, but they weren't as good as the vintage ones Smile

I used to have a strat with late 80's Chandler lipstick pickups. They were very good sounding pickups, clean, low output with ton's of jangle. They had a sound all their own and I liked them for slide and open tunings.

When I'm able to get back to a couple of on hold partscaster projects, I'm planning to use GFS Pro Tubes Lipstick pickups for my Strat-like partscaster. My original plan, for this one, was to source the entire build from Guitar Fetish, but having once tried a mid-80s Fender Elite Stratocaster changed that plan, slightly. My current plan is to use Jaguar/Jazzmaster, or Bass VI switching; the latter allowing for a "strangle" (bass cut) switch.

Fast Cars & Loud Guitars!

Duceditor, I think the quality can vary in the Squiers VMs. I have had two over the years: a Mustang and a Jaguar. The Mustang was great, really playable after a good setup. But the Jag was a different story, just a dog of a fretboard on it. Still bang for the buck though if you get a good one.

I have heard such tales. Truly a shame.

I guess I was lucky. Bought both (A VM JM and a VM Jag) sight unseen, online, and both were and are superb guitars in every way. Required the typical JM/Jg bridge setup, and some nut work so the Jag would accept .12 flats, but since then they have been absolutely stellar. Fit right in with my Fenders and Gibbies.

Still rockin' after all these years!

Just took delivery of a partscaster strat in trade, with Chandler body, Chandler lipstick p/us. Really interesting guitar. Plugged straight in to an amp, lipsticks tend to be unimpressive. These Chandler are a bit hotter output than some others I've had. With the right clean boost - and a little extra push on the gain knob - a whole different story. They're also sensitive to height adjustment. These had to go up a bit on the bass and middle p/u.

Properly dialed in, they sound very nice. Not really the same as my other strat with the typical singles. A little lighter in the mids maybe. Which could help explain why these pickups do so well with OD. (I haven't tried anything past low gain clean boost at this point, but it's easy to hear how the extra push wakes up these pickups.)
MD

mad dog,
That's exactly how I usually use my old Dano's with lipsticks.
Just a little bit of push added by a booster, EQ pedal or super light overdrive, to where you hear no dirt.
The old ones sound really cool right into and amp but boy....do they ever come alive with a little boost.
I sold one of my '58's to a local player. He said he really wanted a Dano but never heard one he liked. When he came by to try the guitar out I demonstrated it right into the amp and then I said "watch (listen) to this" and turned on a slight amount of boost/drive.
His eyes got as big as saucers and he exclaimed "Oh My", LOL

I've been able to play pop, rock and country gigs with them and not just for a weird or different sound.
Some years back I was on a tour playing pop country and had a Custom shop Gibson SG, a Tele, a Custom Shop Gold Top Les Paul and a '64 1457 amp in case Dano. At the end of a show there were three guys at the edge of the stage waiting to ask gear questions (not a usual occurrence for me)and of all the great guitars I had with me all they were raving about was the sound of the Dano. The same thing happened a few more times on that tour.

Lipsticks - they're not just for breakfast. LOL

Cheers,
Jeff

What Crazy Aces said! My first electric was a silvertone/dano with lipsticks and I used it a lot. All gigs! Surf music, English pop, US garage music--think late 60's. High school dances for the most part, block parties, military parties, etc. Used a Layfette fuzz tone with it and a borrowed Guild Copicat unit. And Black Diamond standard strings with a B string in place of the wound G. I really miss that guitar. I have 3 guitars with lipsticks now, 2 danos and 1 silvertone. Run 'em with a LPB-1 power booster.
Plan on using the 2 danos if my surf band every gets going too. Thumbs Up Agree

I used it yesterday to recycle a forum topic. I hope that helps. It is tiresome making each new topic a 'favorite'. Is that the point? What was the topic?

I'm hoping to get a DC59 from 1999 Korea from a guy on craigslist. I"m thinking I might like it. It's purple.

Doesn't have a Bigsby, but soon my USA Tele will, as does my 1966 Gibson SG Jr.

Whenever I think aobut passing the Dano by, I listen to the clip of Jimmy Page from "it Might get loud" and I just fall in love with it again.

What are your thoughts on the Dano styles? DC59, 63, 67 Heaven....what's your fave and why?

The DC's are my least favorite old or reissue.
The bridge pickup is too close to the bridge so you have very low output when used by itself and the overtones are the least pleasing of the bunch.
Most people just use the two pickups together because they are in series but I find that to be rather limiting.
I'd stick with the 63 out of what you listed.

My 2 cents,

Jeff

I'd love a DC59. The only shorthorn I have is my 1999 Convertible in blue-burst. Lovely.

I've thought about getting a Bigsby for my Hodad but I can get fantastic tremolo (or vibrato, never can keep those 2 straight) by just swinging it around hard as I can. I've got it tuned to drop C and it makes for a superior baritone.

But then I can't stay away from my 1457- first guitar, first love, first in the Twang in my Heart.
