I like the Beatles and Hendrix, but I hope this thread doesn't devolve into an argument about whether you like them or not. If anyone wants to post that subject, do so on the shallow well.

This thread should probably end. Just because good info is buried. How about a new one entitled something like "direct substitutions for 6L6 and their tonal impact" For instance here's one I turned up this morning that claims to be between an EL34 and a 6L6 which seems to suggest it plugs right in... Clearly I need to talk to a tech... Check that, a really really really good tech...
Badash really really bad choice of words we all need to be more laid back
Daulshowman is a kickass Engineer/amp tech, back in the day I was always emailing him on advice and he comes through with the info you need an awesome help when I was starting out with my amp ventures and repair, there are plenty of excellent amp techs/guitar techs here @ SG101 and Dualshowman aka Matt is one of them and DGG of Gomezamps and there's probably even more that we haven't even discovered in this forum or that have come forward yet, we need to give these fine folks a chance and have them express thier expertize and then research then make your call before you offened others that are in the trade in making a living from servicing amplifiers or just say nothing keep the insults to your self and thank them for the feedback if its not to your liking or what you wanted to hear move on, the worst thing is to make enemies and you don't want that my friend in any place, were here to learn and to help others learn and to share the things we know about amps and guitars and most of all the music... not to be-little or bash or to even put down but to help each other out.
Piece man
Thanks for the props man. Matt's info is spot on about the EL34's.
I think many of his points are made to elucidate the fact that generally "yes" you can use EL34's in an amp using 6L6GC's BUT some important caveats need to be considered.
I get the feeling he is saying "Is it worth modding and possibly threatening the health/causing damage of a/to a healthy amp for the sake of the use of a specific tube?"
I nor he nor can anyone answer that for badash but badash.

Heater current is listed @1.4A
A 6L6GC uses 0.9A
Two of the EL37's is 2.8A ~3A of heater current.
On some 50W heads this may exceed what they supply.
We're not even including the heater current draw from the miniatures in said amp.
The amp's PT will go south quickly if it's not rated for this high current draw.
As an example, a Bassman is able to handle 3A. If you also throw the minatures used in it you will exceed the rating and the PT will be at risk.
Matt's info is solid.

I'm a fan more of the Roman Republic than the Roman Empire, but Cicero couldn't do much about it, nor can I.
On a happier note, I made a site with some notes about the Slacktone Amp. There is also an explanation that may support a posted opinion on this thread about tolerances, etc. That portion was written by a friend of mine who knows my amp well, but did not do the mods.

Thanks Dave! Nice job.
I assume you built this amp primarily for playing live and touring? I see it has lots of nifty features for overcoming the "gotchas" of the road...

You got, Brian. It's the way I figured out how to fly the amp for free {before 9-11} until they lowered the luggage allowance to 50lbs. Now, I have to pay a couple bucks for the extra weight. I separate the chassis from the cabinet for shipping.~ dave

That same preference cost Cicero his head. I hope it doesn't cost you your head.

I think Sgt. Pepper's is shit. I think Hendrix is shit. I think Metallica is shit.
You can tell a lot about a person by what music they like. I don't care for Sergeant Pepper's either, and I saw Hendrix and wasn't impressed, but I 'd never reduce those contributions to fecal matter. Nice choice of words.
Here's more context for y'all: This was a knock on what happened with the thread, not a true diatribe. While what I said still stands as truth, I do like most Beatles music (I could probably give you lyrics/chords/basslines/instruments off the top of my head verbatim) and once was in love with Sgt. Pepper's. I've finally come to the conclusion that the Beatles became too self indulgent for my tastes, this album being the pinnacle.
As for Dave's amp, it appears that major modifications were made. This is clearly not a stock Fender amp with EL34s stuck in. That power transformer is living on borrowed time...

I don't like Sgt. Peppers as well. I love all their stuff before and after.

Damn Dave, I've never this side of you. An historian and humorist you may have to replace Kurt Vonnegut as my favorite human.
