A six pack??? For each person, right?

Jeez, if not, Kyle, you guys clearly don't know how to practice.

Just razzin'

you guys are too much fun. Very Happy Very Happy

I drive to rehearsal. No drink 'n' drive for this guy! one beer and that's it. Cheers

off-days and on days. if rehearsal sucks just quit, or go do something productive that doesn't need kick ass rock and roll attitude. have the rhythm section practice on tightness. make the band clap rhythms. grab a mic and cassette and record some songs for reference purposes. or jsut go sit, have a smoke and a drinke and talk BS! Very Happy

I have to drive which rules out many of the excellent suggestions made.

I guess the moral is don't go to a surf gig if the band have clean bathrooms...

Twisted Evil burn the guitars, get monstrously drunk and try again next week. continue treatment until condition improves. leave the bathrooms alone. peace

When band practice sucks we generally do one or two things...

  1. We jam for awhile - any and all music is acceptable. One guy starts it and we jam thru a medley of all kinds of crap. Whoever gets louder starts the segue into the new song, and it's usually not surf music. We end up 20 minutes later laughing our asses off, and a bit surprised at how good it sounded.

  2. Our bass player has the most formal music training of the group. When things suck we defer to him to get us back on track. Egos are checked at the door (which isn't easy to do) and we follow his directions (which isn't easy to do). It's sorta like trusting an experienced coach of a sports team.

You'd be surprised how much better practice becomes afterwards. If not, we call it an early night.

CUTBACK

We just stop, go get tacos, and come back. Tacos make everything better.

I find that when we have a bad rehearsal we usually play really well at the show. Confused

That's funny. Same here. We always joke that a bad practice means a good show. Laughing

The Volcanos

we don't have bad practices...or bad shows. haha.

Play a stupid tune or do something that makes everyone laugh and after that... You'll be ready to play again, or you can go out and do something and then go back to play. It's worked for my band.

... So what tips do people have for when a practice goes bad?

Give it away for the night, make the drummer clean your bathroom and the bass player gets the fish n chips/tacos.

If your practice sucks, just have a gigantic fight thats so bad that you want nothing more than to pick your equipment back up and play, just to make it stop. Usually the anger between bandmates turns into really agressive kick ass music. Worked for us.

Happiness is being a surf musician that actually surfs. Ride Lord Hunt Surfboards!!!
