Last night, band practice was awful. To be brutally honest, we sucked. I really would have preffered to have stayed home and cleaned the bathroom.
We were trying to get new ideas of the ground (we've got loads of ideas we've recorded that just need arranging into songs) and just couldn't add any vibe or spark to any of them.. noone in the band could come up with anything to add that extra lift.
You could tell it was bad, because our drummer started being polite to people. He is usually the one person you rely on to call BS in the band no matter what.. but he seemed frightened to dampen the mood any further! I realised he's actually far better to be around when being mindlessly cantankerous and beligerent as per usual!
So what tips do people have for when a practice goes bad?

IMHO, when a band practice goes bad on you, just stop. I've found that some days the music just doesn't flow, no matter what you do. So you either, go have tacos (suggested earlier or maybe in your case, fish and chips... which we can't seem to get right in the country) and take a long break from it or just come back on another night. In our band we all try to come to practice prepared so in most cases the creative juices are already flowing. Preparation is a key to successful practices.

Don't force it...and, by all means don't worry about it. Some days just suck, that's all.

Make your bass player clean the bathroom.

Practice is tougher for us since our lead guitarist, WoodyJ, lives in the Atlanta area. That's why preparation is so important for us.
I like a clean head as much as the next guitarist but if a bass player won't dust, what the heck good is he?

Not to be a advocate for drugs or anything. But sometimes passing the peace pipe can get a bad session back on track.
Or it can make everyone crave tacos...
MMMMM.. tacos

Play one of your favorite, easier songs as if it were a metal song. Heavy distortion, headbanging, the whole nine. It'll loosen you up and remind you how good things sound with a little reverb in the mix.
Otherwise just drink more. And then drink some more. And then break out the hard stuff, and see how much you're left to clean up.

First off, WoodyJ is not our bass player (heck I can't even remember our bass players name...) and secondly, he's obsessive complusive. Haven't you taken a good look at his pantry?
Actually, the best idea I've heard (other than the cleaning bathroom one) is for the bass player to buy tacos. Now if I could only remember his name...

Woody is great at multi-tasking, He plays great bass AND he cleans a mean bathroom, (pretty good guitar player too), buys lotsa music stuff, great beer, cool cars, silly dog. He does have us ALL beat in one respect. Does anybody in 101 land know of anyone else who's whole living room is dedicated to surf music? Wall to wall Fender amps, ceiling to floor Fender guitars, a pool table on one end and a recording studio at the other? My kinda guy........ed
