I have a good trick to keep the strings from unwinding Cut the ball end off of some old strings and put your new strings straight through it. The extra ball end will end up between the new string's ball end and the tremolo. It keeps the string from rubbing against the tremolo tail piece. Works like a charm for me! |

Don't worry about getting used to it. Felt like I'm home at the first chord. Played better than any guitar I've played before (except for my original Mosrite). — |

What would be the difference between the 59 and the 60 models? The 59 is +500$, do you think it's worth it? —https://zakandthekrakens.bandcamp.com/ |

Apart from some minor differences the Whammy is totally different. It also has a sidejack. IDK if it is worth the extra $, but heard only good things about them. I personally dislike sunburst and sidejacks on Mosrite(style guitars). Still waiting for the bolt on model! — |

The difference between the 59 and the 60 is two fold. First, the 59 has a Side Jack instead of having it mounted on the pick guard. The second difference is it having a Hand Cast version of the Vibrato. However, this is really an asthetic thing. I actually own a 59 Custom with the standard Shade Vibrato. I was able to pay the same price as the 60 Custom for having this modification. The paint job on the 59 Custom, if you are into Sunburst, is outstanding, as it has a 2 tone headstock. —THE KBK ... Soldering he unwound strings the way you mentioned does the trick entirely. D'Addario actually offers some strings that are pre-soldered like this. But I really can't see paying the extra price when it costs fractions of a cent and takes just a couple of minutes to do this yourself. —THE KBK ... This is the last known signal. I also just noticed it doesn't have a nut. Is that correct? Just 2x zero frets? — |

All of the current models of Hallmark now just have a zero fret and a fretwire lead. They did away with the old style lead a few years ago, even on the Custom 60's. —THE KBK ... This is the last known signal. We offer Sanctuary. www.thekbk.com |

What do you mean by fretwire lead? My 2013 model has the classic nut. |

Hmmmm...Interesting...I purchased my 59 Custom back in 2012. I was concerned about the fretwire lead at the time. Bob told me all future Hallmark models would utilize this. I suppose he changed his mind. —THE KBK ... This is the last known signal. We offer Sanctuary. www.thekbk.com |

So for someone who's never played a Mosrite style guitar, what's the best way to describe the sound of the Hallmark (Custom 59 and 60) versions in relation to a Srat, Jag, Tele etc? |

Darker and much hotter tone. They pickups are really powerful...look up Ventures Live in Japan 1965 and you will really hear the Mosrite tone. —THE KBK ... This is the last known signal. We offer Sanctuary. www.thekbk.com |

I had a bright red Stradette for a while, after buying it for its looks. About 50% of people thought it looked great and the other 50% had the opposite opinion. There was little indecisiveness. Pluswise, its vibrato was smooth and did not take the guitar out of tune. The neck was slender and comfortable. Otherwise, its tone suited rockabilly rhythms more than surf leads, in my opinion. On my inquiry Bob Shade said its pickups differ from those on the Classic 60 (Mosrite style) guitar. It was the only guitar I owned on which I could not find a surfy setting. Access to upper frets was hindered, and the edge of the body poked into the middle of my right forearm. Forearm discomfort convinced me to sell it. —Insanitizers! http://www.insanitizers.com Last edited: Mar 12, 2014 21:47:43 |

Yep Ben, that sunburst one was a real honey. I loved to just sit around and noodle on it for hours. Thought I looked pretty spiffy (for and old guy) playing it as well. I never did use it live much as it was so different sounding from my Jazzmaster. But I finally ended up using light gauge flats on it to thicken up the tone and that made it much more happy and familar sounding. Recently it has moved to Richard's house to help soften the blow of the 355. As a matter of fact I am still working with the 355 and the flats to come up with a real comfy combo that I can't put down as well. All said though, My AVRI Jazzmaster is THE tough act to follow. Bob at Hallmark always seemed like a good guy to deal with.. ed —Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps? |
