Did anyone get any pictures with Standells co founder, Godfather of Punk and lead guitarist Tony "Dirty Water" Valentino? He was at SG101 on Sat. He was so stoked by the surf sound he is recording a surf tune in the near future.

I want to thank Ivan and Brian for their reviews on everything that happened around the festival last week. I've really enjoyed the chronicles of every show and all your experiences before and during the festival.
I've seen some videos (exciting) and I'm really looking forward to John Koontz upload to youtube everything he recorded during those days.
I hope one year I could be there with you. That my dream.

Ivan: I do have several of them (there are so many) but I truly enjoyed watching (and re watching) you and Danny, JonPaul and Dane in performance. Worthy of repeated listens over and over. Also BEWARE of an American group using ATLANTICS a as there name. Not so good. Also if you know of other vids other than surf dogs that are still accessible you could always e mail them to me. Thanks for all, you do reviews etc. also enjoyed Brian's and all contributions.

I still believe an ATLANTICS TRIBUTE CD is worthy of replication in your fans point of view.

Hey Tim, thanks for introducing me as well. Dirty Water was one of the first guitar licks I learned as an 11 year old want-to-B guitar star. I wish I coulda hung out and chatted with him. All that loud music made it impossible dammit ! Stoked that he was into what we do.

Brian's trip report part 3: Friday Morning Rehearsal & Afternoon Party

Friday morning the gang (Dane, Ivan, Danny, and I) had another glorious breakfast at Gourmet Pie & Pastry on Katella near Don's & The Starting Gate. We then headed to Jonpaul's super secret practice space for another Atlantics' tribute rehearsal. We met Jonpaul there and the guys dug in and ran through the songs another time. It sounded so great sitting so close. The pictures I posted a few pages back were from that day. The rehearsal went smoothly and the guys seemed quite pleased and Ivan pronounced the band ready. I could not wait to see the reaction of everyone at the convention.

With that box checked we moved onto the next objective: Bigtikidude's BBQ & House Party. Another drive and we found ourselves in Orange County and pulled up to a house full of friendly surf fans. I have to hand it to Jeff, his dad Craig, and mom Lou Ann, for opening their house like that. They had tons and tons of food, drink, and treats for everyone. They are the greatest hosts a bunch of travellers could hope for. At the party I saw Jamie & friend Suellen, Bob Walk, Josh & Jenny, Rick S., Emilio, Threesome, Lorenzo, Anne and Freda, Midwest Surf Guy, John K (Tuck), Eric from the Trabants, The El Caminos, Mike & Sandy from 9th Wave, Big Wave Dave, Bruce (from Forbes!), Paul Johnson & Steve Pugh (bass player in PJ & The Galaxies), Cousin Mary & Ken, Carol (Mom Surfing), Marc from San Diego, and ... I'm sure I'm forgetting some people sorry! But what a crowd!!

I'm not much of a party / socializer guy, but I had fun talking to a lot of people. In particular I remember talking to Steve Pugh about his PJ & The Galaxy days and other bands. He still has all his original gear from back in the day. And I found out he was a software guy (like me!). Pretty cool! Our conversation bounced from surf music to programming in the 70's & 80's, lol. Steve was also with Davie Allan & The Arrows with Paul Johnson briefly. Steve is actually in that cool B&W video of Davie & The Arrows (along with PJ) playing Moon Dawg on some TV show!

Another great conversation I had was with Jovana from Threesome. I asked her where in the world she learned to hit the drums so freakin' hard. She laughed and then pointed to Uroš and said (in her amazing Serbian accent) "It was all his fault. He tortures me. When I first started playing he kept telling me 'Stop hitting like a pussy! Stop hitting like a pussy!" Ha-ha!

I tried to talk to some of the El Caminos but unfortunately the language barrier is pretty high. I know zero Japanese and their English was not so great. However I did get a business card from the drummer (he works at a drum store) and I found out the lead guitar player's partner / girlfriend / wife who was also travelling with the El Caminos plays guitar in an all-girl surf band in Japan called Lulufin the woo hoo. They showed me some pictures and videos and wow it looked like great fun. Check them out! (She later played guitar at Don the Beachcomber's during the Sunday jam and she is quite good!).

I caught up with a few more people and talked to Jeff and Marc for a bit. Even though I only see Marc once a year I feel like we are old friends, ha-ha.

Then we had to scram to make it all the way to Pasadena through the crazy traffic to see Frankie & The Poolboys, The Surf Coasters, and Casino 66.

A big, big, thank-you to the Hanson family for the amazing party, food, and friendship. That was so cool and definitely a highlight of the trip for me.

Indeed! Thanks for the introduction, Tim! Here's a pic of me with PJ, one of the founding fathers of Surf, and Tony Valentino, one of founding fathers of Garage Punk! Two heroes of mine in the same place. And both had Dick Dodd in their bands. Mind blown!

I think you're right. However on the pictures of MadScientist (Thanks!) it looks like there is also a Strat single coil in the middle position:

Would be interesting to know how the thing is wired. My guess would be that the middle position activates the two P90s, while the Strat SC is accessible only via push/pull. Anyway: the whole combination seems promising. I use the middle Pickup the most on my Strat anyway. Being able to combine that with P90s or even JM PUs and an offset body...

Actually it's strange that there isn't an Atlantics tribute album around already. I mean there were instro tribute comps for Dick Dale, Link Wray, the Ventures, the Shadows (several!), Shadowy Man on a Shadowy Planet, the failed Richie Podolor tribute and even projects with looser connections to surf music like the CDs with music by Ennio Morricone, Frank Zappa, Henry Macini, Burt Bacharach or Jesus Christ Superstar done by surfbands.

Seems to me like an Atlantics tribute is long overdue...
