I am a BIG Bill Frisell fan. Looking forward to seeing, hearing... "Guitars in The Space Age"!

https://kingpelican.bandcamp.com/

Just curious what we mean by Jazz surf...are we talking about improvised music played with a surf vibe OR surfed up versions of American songbook tunes, generally using a form other the the 12 bar blues, that become the stable of jazz (and surf)?

I love the latter...Caravan, Night and Day, Night in Tunisia, Comin' Home, Watermelon Man, Bali Hai, Tico Tico..to name a few! Fun versions..and notable that the chords invariably have every alteration removed...as if interpreted by 16 years olds..which I can relate too!

Jazz Surf: "The Bells of the Swingin' Kahuna"

"Hello Girls!"

That was amazing and awesome Marty

Bill Grew up in Colorado, and was a big fan of the Astronauts. He use to gush over that Everybody's A-OK record cover with all the blonde gear, he shared with me.

Bill and I have had a couple conversations about surf music, really awesome guy! He speaks about it with real passion and nostalgia.

He frequents my buddies' shop, and he bought my old '64 ES-330. Hell of a player. He is one of those great virtuosic players that actually creates great music.

Cool story Jake! I would even go so far as to say that his playing is so great because it goes BEYOND virtuosity: Very few notes but a lot of impact.

Actually I watched a longer video from the current tour yesterday and thought it was really interesting music. What confused me a bit in the beginnig of this whole discussion is that while the set features some SURF SONGS, the whole thing has only very little to do wih SURF MUSIC: The sound, feel and interaction of the musicians is totally different. The whole project more or less follows the same broad concept of JAZZ that also is the basis for most of the other stuff Frisell plays. But I still think that records like 'Floratone', 'Unspeakable' or 'The Intercontinentals' will remain the more interesting items in his catalogue.

Bill Frisell is taking the "Guitars in the Space Age" show to Europe in October 2014. For tour dates:

Starts Oct 24 in Cormons, Italy, ends in London, UK, Nov 16.
THey're playing Halloween in Tallinn, Estonia.
Only one show in Germany (Russelsheim, Nov 3).

I'm interested in how the audiences react to the material.
Hopefully, this will be a "CD Release" tour, i.e. the new CD will be available and for sale at shows.

Hope some of our across the pond SG101'ers will be able to see and review.

I saw the " Guitars in the Space Age" show here in Halifax in early July. It was very polite. Before I went, I thought the show could either feature really exciting interpretations of the songs, or really tame versions. Sadly it was the latter. The musicians are all fine players, there's no disputing that, but the versions of the songs sounded like background music, just meandering along. There was no musical pay off, no tension, no energy. I left the show disappointed. I do like Bill Frissel, but it just seemed like the wrong approach, or the wrong material for him.

The opening band featured Julian Priester, and Jerry Granelli. The ensemble played Julian's Love, Love album live in its entirety (for the first time ever, recorded in 1973). They tore the place apart, and made the price of the ticket more than worthwhile. Perhaps this was the wrong band to have on the Frissel bill, or maybe the band was having on off night.

I'd be interested to hear other reviews of Guitar in the Space Age.

Rev

PS The audience loved it and clapped loudly for every song they recognized. A very similar audience left in droves when the Lee Boys played earlier in the week. That show really rocked!!!

Somehow I keep bumping into stuff from Frisell's 'Guitar in the Space Age' Whatever

I just watched a longer concert video and will add it below for people interested. In comparision with my impression of the album the live version of the band clearly wins, because there seems to be a bit more of spontaneity involved. And actually I liked the moments best, when the musicians got away the most from the traditional material, for example the sound textures at the end of Telstar (ca. 35 minutes into the set).

But I still stick to my opinion that even though the set features certain surf songs it is by no means surf music.

Missed this first time around. Really nice, Marty! Very much enjoyed that one.

I know I'm really late to this but Shadowy Men did Misty, Summer Wind, and Harlem Nocturne (they called it Harlem by the sea) which are jazz standards. Laika and the Cosmonauts did Night in Tunisia. Dick Dale did Caravan which is a Duke Ellington tune. Actually Santo and Johnny did a few jazz standards, Caravan and Summertime. I know these are done more surf style and are jazz tunes. I'm sure there's got to be more stuff like that out there.

Does this count?
It was Duke Ellington inspired
I actually heard it in my head as a full blown horn ensemble piece.

I'm liking that quite a lot!

"Hello Girls!"

What I remember in this line is Cleveland's Martini Five-O. A band called that, not the Blue Hawaiians' song called that.

Mostly Banzai Pipeline

And then there was a sort of lounge band in Denver for a year or two called Vibes on Velvet:

Perry Mason Theme

Maybe also the Raybeats. People remember their surfy stuff best, but most of it was anything but surf.

I just got turned on to this duo ... The Mattson 2

I can say if they are surf or jazz but it's damn good music.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pAYPXH57kI

That Mattson 2 is great stuff, it looks like a live recording. Certainly not your typical Southern California band. Now I really want a doubleneck with a bass. I see they have collaborated with Dave Pike!

Planet Seven w/ Heart Full of Soul

Entirely a matter of scale.
