I’ll look for more from these bands. Thanks for posting those. The best part about sg101 is all the bands that I’ve learned about, that I would never have heard of otherwise. Top

Its influence on popular music is incalculable—it expanded pop’s sonic language toward psychedelia and set new standards for virtuosity in rock ’n’ roll—but its legacy is one of kitsch and cult devotion. (Most of the great surf revival acts of the past 30 years have relied on a very good visual gimmick.) Frisell made surf music a plainclothes proposition, taking on genre standards like “Pipeline” in a way that restored their seriousness; these were and are compositions full of shadowy feeling and immaculate tunefulness." People see this show, buy the record and the impression most of them get is: Finally someone takes this music and works it with a modern approach. As if most people here wouldn't have done the same over the last two decades. Major bummer. (Don't get me wrong: I am sure Frisell had the best intentions and maybe the record will even turn out to be nice. mattk Joined: Dec 18, 2007 Posts: 13	Posted on Jun 18 2014 09:16 PM I was at the first "Guitars in the Space Age" gig at SF Jazz and saw the four night run at Jazz Alley in Seattle, WA in Jan/Feb of 2014. Most of the reviews from Frisell fans (and jazz people in general, like the latest one on the Forums page) seem to talk about how Bill didn't do any "refreshing" of an "old" style of music. Personally, for me as a hardcore Frisell fan (been going to see him live since 1990) AND an instro surf fan, seeing Bill play songs like "Rumble", "Pipeline", "Baja", "Walk, Don't Run", and "Telstar" was a dream come true. OK, so he didn't do any radical re-interpretation of the songs. But do they REALLY need "re-inventing"? I had to "Smile" when I heard him do two songs from a band that most people mention when you mention "surf music" (Beach Boys). I've heard him do "Surfer Girl", but "In My Room" was sublime. In Seattle, they also did "Wind Cries Mary" (in tribute to local boy, Jimi Hendrix?). It usually takes a couple of years before a CD appears after Bill plays a certain kind of music, this project seems to be getting off the launch pad a bit quicker. BTW, I heard at least one of the recent shows in NYC was streamed on the Internet. I'd encourage any surf music fan to see Bill's "Guitars in the Space Age" show. He's doing it at quite a few jazz festivals this summer around North America (like Vancouver, BC, this Sun-Jun 22). I;m going to the show in Napa, CA, July 6, then flying to Mineapollis, MN, the next day to see two nights at the Dakota Jazz venue (two shows each night). Then wait for the CD release and the SG101 Convention (Surf Coasters, who did a great "re-invention" of "Baja", slowing it down, down down). But the problem is, that (as your list of song indicates) it's the same dozen (old) tunes again, to which surf music is reduced to in many cases (the stuff everybody knows). To me surf music isn't just a thing from the past, so new songs "in the style" or "inspired by" would have been a more interesting project from my perspective. He use to gush over that Everybody's A-OK record cover with all the blonde gear, he shared with me. Bill and I have had a couple conversations about surf music, really awesome guy! He speaks about it with real passion and nostalgia. He frequents my buddies' shop, and he bought my old '64 ES-330. Hell of a player. He is one of those great virtuosic players that actually creates great music. Top
