It's not just Surf, it's not just the D.C. area, it's all over. Perhaps there are a few towns where music is happening, musicians are easy to find and joining or starting a band is no problem, I've never been to that place. I know of a sum total of two musicians into surf in my state and I'm one of them. After almost forty years of playing out, making a living at music and always being able to join a working band I have to admit, live music is dying. I'll keep at it, but I gotta admit sometimes it's hard.

Some of my more advanced muscian friends tell me that some--not surf musicians, mind you--but some muscians are flakey. I think your experience may suggest such a statistical correlation.
Flakey just means "not interested" without verbally so to avoid confrontation/hurting feelings.

I can understand your frustration. Our band is completely assembled via internet. So that's proof it can be done. However, it takes time and patience. 90% of all the participants on forums are blues, metal and emo musicians. Nothing wrong with that, but surfmusic comes from a different angle. You have to dig it. It helps to look for ads that are somewhat offbeat. People who are into punk, garage, low-fi blues trash etc. sometimes dig surf as well. We got Stef when we saw his ad asking for musicians for a 'Hellacopters'- type a band. So stick with it.

If it were easy, everyone would do it.

Say you wanna play all Ventures songs,
Wear bad Hawaiian shirts, and the guys must be
50 or older. And you'll have a line down the block.
I'm only 10% joking.

I understand your frustration! I'm settled in Stockholm and Oslo, setting up a working surfband seems impossible.
Metal seem's to dominate in Sweden and in Norway I quite really haven't figured it out yet. Seems like playing surfmusic always will be a sideproject or done as some kind of favour for an afficionado.

BTD, thanks for that, I'm gonna give it a shot on CL and see what happens!

Is anyone in Cleveburg doing an instro thing?
I would think if you stand around Coventry with an empty guitar case (no need to lug extra weight) and a cup of coffee in your hand 50 people an hour are gonna stop and ask if you play guitar, or what's in the case.
Bingo, ice broken, get numbers, start band.

I think the thing that bothers me the most out of all of it is that people just stop talking. Instead of owning up to it, and saying that you're not interested, you just drop off the face of the earth. I try really hard to respond to everyone that hits me up off of my CL ads (except the one o r two-word responses that are usually spammers). I also believe in being honest with people about my abilities. "I've been playing off and on for a couple of years. I can learn lines, but I haven't gotten to the point where I can just jam. I'd like to start with covers, but eventually move into originals." I'm a bass player. Our parts aren't THAT difficult, and I'm looking for covers. I was never the least prepared person in my band. Don't have any interest in playing rhythm or lead, even if I could. I like the low end too much.
BTD......a ban on Hawaiian shirts might have been part of the issue with my guys bailing on me.
A large part of the problem may be that I just don't want to play anything else. Not interested in playing rock....blues.....MAYBE the Beatles, but that's about it. Along with that is that I'm just not that in to playing along with a CD. I want to play with other people.

Try the Washington City Paper Classifieds:

I think it's free to post an ad, and they have Musicians Wanted and Musicians Available sections.

At least partially true, Ventures gets more recognition and response than just plain surf.

I've just quit two bands and have a final gig with the better of the two tomorrow. Looking for musicians is a lot like dating in my opinion, a pain in the ass but potentially thrilling. So far no one is all that interested, and I'm considering almost anything. I tried for years to get a surf band going, I suspect it can be done but no luck yet.

I think by narrowing your format to just Surf music you're probably missing out on some good musicians. Perhaps try rewriting your add and expand the format (Surf, Garage, Rockabilly, Roots Blues, Americana, Honky Tonk, etc?).
Half the battle is getting with good musicians that are open to something a bit outside the norm.
I've had decent luck with craigslist btw. I've found that you're going to deal with about 80% nut jobs... just comes with the territory. The few adds I've ran were pretty detailed and if I got stupid replies and questions I just moved right past them.
The best referrals come from networking with other good local musicians and to do that you generally have to play. If you're somewhat of a beginner who's trying to get an niche project off the ground it's going to be tough.
I think going after just Surf musicians is a pretty lofty goal.

will, i feel your pain. i finally gave up trying to find people to play surf with and have ended up in a cover band. i really enjoy playing music with a group and creating something from parts that becomes a whole, if that makes any sense. we've been practicing together for a year now and have about 10ish gigs booked for the summer. so, i've spent all my time learning 40 something songs and haven't learned a single new surf tune in a year, which kind of makes me sad. i'm still hoping to at least get one or two instrumentals in the mix eventually, which is going to lead me to a new topic.

Messing with someones amp is rather er, not nice. Kinda like touching the paint on your show car or sitting on your motorcycle.
