I found some thin brass strips like Sonichris described on a hobby shop's eBay page...I also bought some .10 Chromes. Hopefully this double whammy will take care of things, I'll post again with results.

I look forward to it Smile
Please attach a photo !

Just got the strips today, but the strings haven't arrived yet. I added the third spring anyway (still using .11 Chromes) and it really does make a big difference. I angled the claw in an attempt to counter the tension of the bass strings and it's doing great.

Good to go! It could use a little more tweaking but it's already sooo much better. It used to go 1/2 step out of tune if I did anything with the trem bar, now I can really crank the bar and after a lot of flailing around like that it's only just slightly off, which can be corrected by lightly moving the bar in the opposite direction. If you don't abuse it, it doesn't even go out of tune. With .10s it'd probably be perfect.
Thanks a lot for the tip, guys. Before this I was planning on just blocking the tremolo.

Here are the strips I bought; tin cutters work just fine. I broke two cheap drill bits trying to make the holes though Sigh

Thanks alot for posting the pictures.
I will do a similar mod on my SGV!

Good luck. A slightly thicker piece of brass might be a good idea, just to keep it stable.
I was re-stringing with with .10 Chromes and the brass strip somehow ended up sideways in the middle of the trem cavity...so I had to loosen the claw and reset it. It was fine...but...

...but then the damn trem arm broke off in the bridge. It wasn't the official SGV arm, so it never fit quite right.
Man. Anyone ever dealt with that?

Those screws are used for attaching the top part of the tremolo to the tremolo block underneath.
I would not recommend any adjustment without first removing the springs and the strings!

The original arms are still available from Yamaha, the part # is QC541101 and it's about $38 with shipping from www.yamaha24x7.com

I recently got in a 3-pack of high tension trem springs from Floyd Upgrades. I loosened the strings on my SGV and replaced the two stock springs with two of these, which actually pulled the trem too far in the opposite direction! I was irked. After a few minutes I decided to just try one, and viola, the trem sat straight and the arm is at a much more useable angle. I put the stiff spring on the bass side and put the stock string back on the treble side.

This is my trem solution. I went to the hardware store and bought 10mm square metal pipe. I drilled a 3mm hole in the trem posts and added new M3 threads.

Seems to work perfectly. No problem now to use 011 strings Big Grin

I ordered a set of .13 Chromes...I have my doubts as to whether they'll even fit in the rollers or not.
If so then I'm going for SGV baritone tuning.

When I owned this guitar, I used 10's and thought they worked well.

I had .11s on my SGV 800, which had been modded with a third trem string by my tech friend. It helped stabilize the trem, and eliminated problems with higher string gauges. BTW, that guitar felt and played much better with .11s, after coming to me with .10s.

Next friday we are gonna play here in Berlin together with the Tijuana Panthers from Long Beach.
I decided to play SGV300. So I just put new strings on my white SGV300 (after 4 years).
Actually I use: 12 - 16 - 22 (plain) - 32 - 42 - 52
Plays very good! No problems.

Twang cheers!
