I believe that Jon & the Nightriders did it on their Undercover cd too.
that came out in the late 90s.
Whoever said surf died in 97 was crazy!

Yes, J&TNR covered it too. I had forgotten about the Mermen version. I'll have to check that out again. I love this thread!

"It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea

This is a great thread. I totally missed Ocean Flower's earlier post of the Vy-Dels.

Anyway, here's another Original Surfaris track, Gum Dipped Slicks:

This one may not be lost, but it's cool. Also covered by several bands.

"Blue Surf" by The Temptations reminds me of "Moon Dawg" that I first heard by The Beachboys way back when.

I love that song. The Hangee V have also covered it. Sounds pretty good.

The Deadbeats

Oh, here's my contribution to this thread; "Batman (Freefall)" by The 4 of Us.

The Deadbeats

Great stuff! Love that Hangee V clip. Awesome cover, awesome band.

The Journeymen's Surfers Blues is a big personal fave! A great example of a Freddie King song, San-ho-say, that became a surf song. Surfer's Rule is great too. I first heard these on the CD Rare Surf Vol. 1 The South Bay Bands that came out in '95.

The Journeymen featured Art Fisher who would later form PJ & Artie and of course The Challengers. In the liner notes for the Rare Surf CD it says Art joined the band in '59 and they were the first South Bay Band before even the Belairs to play rock instrumentals. They released this single "Workout" in '61...
