Another cool snarly tune by the Rondells. The drummer tears it up on the break.

Here's fun one we used to play in the early days of The Ghastly Ones.

These aren't surf, but more in the vein of the kind of general instro which was popularized by the Ventures, Fireballs, and Santo and Johnny. You can definitely hear echos of all three in these "lost heroes" recordings from 1962 by a group called The Five Whispers. This group was actually a trio, consisting of two brothers, Bobby and Larry Black, with Jack Greenback on drums.

Midnight Sun is a jazz standard written in the '40s, and popularized by Ella Fitzgerald who had a hit with it in 1957. Bobby Black plays the steel guitar. Bobby played steel with a number of western swing and country bands from the early '50s to the present day...most notably perhaps with Commander Cody and Asleep at the Wheel, but he performed with his brother in various groups off and on throughout his career. I got to see him in a solo set in the '90s and he was phenomenal.

I include the flip side as well. I read that they only made three recordings, but I haven't come across the other. Midnight Sun was a modest hit for them. Notice the Dolton label...the label of The Ventures.

Gary Usher's tune MIDNIGHT RUN performed by his Superstocks and by The Pyramids. The Pyramids do a great job with his tune. Their version of the break is pretty cool.

Thanks, I enjoyed both of those.
Of the 2, I actually preferred the Superstocks version. Nice guitar sound and overall production.

TORTURE an early R&R instrumental by The Fendermen and the surf version by The Nobles! Just add a little reverb, and presto! Surf!

Another early R&R instrumental CATERPILLAR CRAWL by The Strangers and the surf version by The Lively Ones. Just a little reverb does the trick!

I dig this one:
Big Surf by the Sentinals. They have a very funky, R&B influenced sound

Squink Out!

All the DJs on North Sea Surf Radio will be playing all Classic
60s surf on their shows this coming weekend! Tune in and listen!
I'll be playing some kinda obscure stuff.

More classic surf by all the DJs on NSSR all day.
Emilio on now.

Really enjoyed "Midnight Sun" by the Five Whispers. The steel guitar was put to great use back then.

Some serious wailing from THE JOURNEYMEN, featuring ART FISHER also of The Bel-Aires and The Challengers.

Seriously cool clip someone spliced together of the beach stomp from the film "Blue Surf-Ari" cut to the music of THE FENDER IV "Everybody Up". The band onstage in the clip are actually The Blazers, but the dancing really synchs up nicely to Everybody Up!
