Hi,
my new 2nd band Los Apollos!
First I wrote for the band is called "Cafe Bagdad". And we also did a video for it:
http://vimeo.com/29181110
How do you like it?
Comments are appreciated!
With Los Apollos I play a Framus Sorento 6 guitar from 1969 or 1970/71.
Very nice surf sound for my ears with this guitar!
best cheers!

So menacing! Enjoyed that a lot!
Loved the song, and the video too. The looks on the elders faces was priceless. Clearly, they weren't there knowing what they were in for... We're they?
Also, Vimeo says that video got posted 3 months ago... How's come you waited so long to let the cat out of the bag!?!? This is too good to keep under wraps!

That is great. Hey! Some of those "elders" are younger than I. Love the matching non-traditional surf guitars. Maybe if I work harder at it I can get a tone like that out of my semi-hollow archtop too.
More please!

I like it a lot. It's trance-like. The perfect sound for dark, resin stained opium den.

Very, very nice, Ralf!! An excellent video, too. The song seemed to exhibit some Bambis and Phantom Frank influences, which is very cool. Congrats to Los Apollos on a successful launch and here's hoping we hear a lot more from the band!!

After watching the video a few more times, I noticed the Sputniks banner in the background. That tripped a vague memory of Ralf mentioning playing a show with them recently. Lil' search here, lil' search there and whaddyaknow...
For ease of reading, I'll extract the Los Apollos excerpt here, AND embed the band photo, which I am sure if it were originally inline versus a link, the whole first round of announcement would have been much more memorable. (I, for one, am claiming a fully entitled blonde moment... I even responded to the original post for crying out loud! Sheesh.)

Cool to look & listen .. as Ivan said Phamtom Four influence is well recieved! Like it very very very much! I really dig that "dramatic twang" +1!

People complained that the crowd at the Doll Hut for the Disasternauts, Tequila Worms and Slacktone were not smiling. At least not all of them all of the time. I notice the crowd here is not smiling either. I don't think smiley faces are part of the pleasure reaction to surf music. I get a definite pleasure reaction to this and I'm not smiling either.

Yes, youre right. The most of them weren t at the concert at last. And they didn`t knew that they were filmed. Of course they never find out that they are in such a film.
For me it was also an obscure day too with these people there. The location was in a big garden colony in former East Berlin. Many people there look like in the bad 80`s sometimes. The video is joking with this whole situation. We had the thought that the band totally screwed up and nobody is interested in it. Except one dancer! (Surf band reality sometimes, haha! )

This guitar model is indeed unbelievabe good for Surf! Thick, rich, warm and brillant tone! Nice sustaiiiiiiiiin.
Its the Sorento 6 model:
http://www.framus-vintage.de/modules/modells/instruments.php?modellID=480&katID=4627&&cl=EN
They got different bridges and tremolo systems.
I own two Sorentos and they both sound fantastic. And: They are not expensive! Built 1969-72.
Get one and test them out. I don t know how popular they were outside of Germany...

When I play on stage I try to get the audience to dance, yell and uproar. Simply let people get happy with the surf music! This a part of the sense of surf music for me!
Smiling isn`t my first thought.
But mostly people smile when they are happy!?
have a nice day with a little smile!

To me, this was a fantastic video by a great band with legendary musicians. But there's hardly any views and fewer comments. How can this be? As one who is currently making a surfy album of my own I wonder, is there anyone out there who will want to listen? Does anyone care for this genre anymore? Or am I just stuck in a continuous loop of the late 90's surf revival while everyone else has moved on? Perhaps people in general are oblivious to the mere existence of this genre which would make sense since every time I ask someone if they like surf music they say "oh you mean like the Beach Boys"? Either way, if I turn out to be like the guy in the video dancing around by himself while everyone else seems to not even hear the band playing, that's fine with me.

Great. Having played surf for similar audiences more than once, the video really resonated with me. The reward for playing through such a show is that even bewildered people will approach afterward to say that they enjoyed it.
