Hmmm, now that I think of it...the Halibuts covered the Fender IV version of Malibu Run. Oops

I know I`ll get smack downs for this, but Mr. Moto.... way overated. Never really liked the Belairs that much anyway..Bustin surfboards is right up there with it. |

Someone had better make a distinction between the Allman Brothers with Duane and without. The Live at the Fillmore, although too long, is a landmark in rock music history. What unbelievable solos--and I hate long solos. Duane was also half of Derek and the Dominoes! I just don't know what to say to anyone who doesn't love Mr. Moto and Surf Rider. You say you like surf music? Is there one song that everyone loves? |

I just never cared for The Belairs. I like covers of Mr.Moto, just dont care for the original. Im not a fan of Lets go tripping either, at least not Dicks original recording of it. I like when he added reverb to it later in recordings. On another note, I do like Paul Johnson`s later, and more current stuff. What can I say? |

I find this type of response quite puzzling. You asked a question soliciting opinions and I stated mine. Surprise! It doesn't match yours. If you didn't want to know you shouldn't have asked. Or did you only want to know if people agreed with you? Of course there is no accounting for tastes, so let me elaborate on why I feel that the Chantay's version is superior to the Ventures version. I feel that the original has a certain vibe to it that is unmatched by any cover, even a cover as well done as the Ventures'. Also, there is the "first" factor; it is one of the genre defining landmark songs. That song put together a lot of the elements that we take for granted now all in one song. The songwriting on that one is amazing. Maybe it is overplayed now, but think about the first time you heard it. For me, it was like nothing else I had ever heard. Think about how that must have been like in 1963. Paul Johnson told the story on Cowabunga of when he first heard Pipeline, he was in his car and he had to pull off the road to put all his attention on the song. The Ventures cover is very well done, and I like it a lot. But I feel the vibe created by a bunch of teenagers, in this case, trumps the musicianship of the seasoned adult professional musicians. Anyway, of course, just in case it is not clear, this is just my opinion. No need to reply stating that. —Site dude - S3 Agent #202 "It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea |

i asked if people agreed with me. i was stating that i was entitled to my own opinion because i like the Venture's version better, that is all. — |

I'm with Brian on that, although I like the Astronauts version, too (but not as much as the Chantays). Ran — |

I Just heard the Ventures Version of Pipeline in a movie today. Brian, cool recolection of Pauls story, I'l have to bring that up with him next time I see him. Jeff(bigtikidude) —Jeff(bigtikidude) |

i agree with you jeff. and being someone who surfs a lot and has been surfing a very long time, hearing 'pipeline' always makes me think of surfing as does 'stoked' by the beach boys. those tunes 'feel' like surfing. carol — |

For me it is "Miserlou". Why? Well, I have heard Dick Dale's version about a million times so that's not fun anymore. And like "Pipeline", it is almost a cliche, so we don't really ever play it. Modern covers of it seem generally weak. Shame, really, because it is a good song. Maybe it is a case of over-saturation rather than it over-rating. — |

Here are the Surfaris doing Wipeout. For a song that over rated, they crowd sure seems to like it.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEvXuHKg1TE&mode=related&search= |
