Great stuff indeed! Also very interesting to study his playing style up close.

Man, that's some pretty bad ass playing. His picking style is almost like a shamisen player, or banjo:

All these videos are awesome! I totally dig the shamishen one. Those dudes are rockin' out, wailing away at those things with their paint scrapers.

Wow! Did you see how this is described on YouTube? It says: "Live Performance of Japanese traditional Tsugaru shamisen." First, if this is traditional Japanese music, it's easy to understand why they would have gone nuts for Nokie & the Ventures! Second, notice they're described as "Tsugaru shamisen" - well, Tsugaru is the first word of the song by Terry that I posted - so, there's probably a connection there, as the playing style is very similar. Really cool.

Do a YouTube search for "Tsugaru" and a boatload of solo shamisen performances pop up, including one of "Tsugaru Jyongara Bushi"--it's a traditional shamisen song from the Tsugaru region on Honshu. (The region has its own shamisen style.)

BTW, did you guys notice that Terry had to tune his Mosrite twice during the song in the 70s video! Also note the extensive pick wear between the pickups where you can actually see the original sunburst finish (the guitar was refinished black in 1966).
And a tip for those who don't want to order CDs from Japan, there's a great 1965 trad-Japanese-folkmusic-meets-60s-guitar-instro Terry album in stock right now at the US Amazon:
Let's Go Eleki-Bushi
The album kicks off with "Tsugaru Jyongara Bushi" which has even more spectacular playing from Terry than the later live performances.

Klas, I don't think he was tuning - he was RETUNING! It looks and sounds to me like he dropped several strings way down for the middle section where he was playing mostly by himself, I guess so he could play open strings. And then when it went back into the main song, he tuned back up. Being able to do something like that is really remarkable, BTW!! Very, very impressive.

OK, I went ahead and ordered that one - thanks for the tip. I also ordered the 24-track greatest hits collection of Yuzo's stuff. I got that one completely blindly, as I have no idea what's on it. Did I make a right choice or make an expensive mistake? Please advise, as I might be able to still cancel that one. But I REALLY love Yuzo's instros. He's my favorite of all the eleki guitarists I have heard so far.

OK I see, I thought it went out of tune due to his frenetic playing.

According to the buyer review on the Amazon product page, the CD contains "songs from 2 of his most memorable albums" which likely means that it's mostly vocals that I'm pretty sure you won't like. As far as I know he only recorded like 15 instros in the 60s which are mainly divided on three of his 60s albums. For an all instro Yuzo Kayama CD, you should look for the "Black Sand Beach" comp:
I'm totally sure you'll dig the Terry CD though.

Thanks, Klas. Yeah, I came to that conclusion even before you posted this. I was able to find the tracklist in Japanese, and ran it through a translator - I recognized only Black Sand Beach and The Violet Sky as instros, so I immediately cancelled that order. But thanks for replying right away anyway!

Cool, I'm really looking forward to it.

Just heard that song on a commercial, for some remote control game thingy. Sounded familiar...

I used to think it was out of print but Amazon Japan lists one copy in stock. Don't know if you rather not order from Japan but it's easy really. The procedure is the same as any other Amazon site.

those shamisen clips are awesome! did yu notice on youtube they also list a few videos of the Yoshida brothers "live in LA"? I wonder how many of the LA area sg101-ers went....
also entirely new inspiration for the "what pick do you use" thread

Not that he's on sg101. but of anyone I know that would go to something like that it would Be Dave A of the Insects.
he's told me that he goes to alot of middle eastern/Indian music shows.
If somebody hipped me to a show like that, and I didn't have plans I'd probably go.

Yuzo Kayama doing "Black Sand Beach" in a medley from 1997. Starts about 1 minute into it.
