No kidding - some of those are serious allegations.

So that would be a "no"? Nothing you wouldn't consider "family safe" going on with surf?

Facebook SOTS

are you talking about videos?
or music on a cd?
or something that Happens at a live show?

there might be some videos you might not want to show kids, or your grandparents.

But isn't surf music usually instro.
how do you convey non family friendly themes in a non vocal song?
song titles?
Hmmmmm

still wondering who you are thinking about?

Jeff(bigtikidude)

I completely agree with Ivan on this one. We had some conversations a while ago about this and this is exactly how I feel about it. I think every genre needs new bands and fresh sounds.

I am wondering what bands include this, or promote these things.

Not that I endorse them, just wondering where you are getting these ideas from.
Confused

Could it be the band names?
Not to be picking on anyone, I really like all the listed bands.

The Bambi Molesters, Satans Pilgrims and The Ghastly Ones.

About a week ago I was at a freinds there was a group of us learning to make Tiki Mugs and the discussion turned from Exotica Music to Surf.
Only a couple of us are into surf so I plugged in my Ipod and was playing the Bambi's "Intensity".
When asked who was playing and I told'em "Your kiddin right, what a horrible name!!" The lady was a little offended.

Could reactions like this be what he is refering to?

"Maybe there aren't any surf bands; there's only surf music?" Tuck

Some surf bands use go go dancers or even pseudo burlesque dancers in their live shows, which would tend to keep the soccer moms and kids away I guess.

Hasn't surf music been pretty much "family safe" all these years with almost no exceptions. Am I beginning to see a (disturbing) trend away from this aspect by blending Surf with alcohol, cursing, gore, racism, or violence etc?

Nothing is "family safe" in 21st century. And why would it be? Anyway, we, in a "band with horrible name" mix surf with alcohol. Oh yes, and we curse from time to time:)

While it is mostly instrumental music, didn't surf contain aspects of a lot of these things from it's inception? Off the top of my head...
Alcohol-"Intoxica", "Church Key", "The Inebriated Surfer" too many others to mention
Gore-are you talking monster/devil themed stuff or actual gore? Monster/devil stuff is of course another long list...
Cursing- well, if you're talking sexual innuendo "Shootin' Beavers", "Chunky"etc.
Racism- "Scalping Party", "Comanche", "Apache" any number of other exploitative titles involving American Indian, Hawaiian, Mexican/Latin American, Spanish, Arabic/Moorish, Asian cultures.

But hey, it was the early 60s. Kids playing cowboys and Indians was "family fun". California culture had a heavy Latino influence bubbling under the surface, and Hawaii was a new state full of "otherness" to be excited about. I don't really see this as out and out racism as much as curiosity and intrigue. Plus, a lot of the bands were all or part Latino.
Dad had a drink every night at 5 and probably kept going while teenagers and college kids were beer busting whenever they could.
The entire culture was extremely sexist and racist. Surfing as a sport was pretty racist, not allowing Hawaiian or other surfers who weren't lily white to compete or stay in the same motels with the white surfers for competitions.
If the modern examples of these are much different, please give them, I'm curious.

I like that not all bands sound the same.
I love the Trad to a T bands.
the gargey surf, the prog surf. etc.
if everyone sounded the same,
I wouldn't be into the scene as much as I am.

I agree.

I think you are correct. Surf Music was never intended to be "safe". I haven't observed anything inappropriate outside of it's venue. Other than a tripped out hippy chick at the pier. Rolling Eyes

I am really enjoying this thread, and the interchange of ideas

Ivan mentions that the genre is close to being on life-support, that he's really worried about its future

I, for one, think it's "hanging in there" fairly well, for a variety of reasons

BTW, fairly soon I will be announcing a multi-genre 'website venture' (no pun intended!) where I will be the 'host' of the 'surf music' portion. I have spoken to a few of our members about this; I am waiting for the right moment to let everyone know about it. I have already done some interviews (video) for the site. I think if it's handled right (and I will need and count on many of You here to be associated with the site, contribute to it), that the 'surf music genre' will gain attention and be more "visible" and "available", as the website will have tie-ins to national promotions, TV shows, movies, etc. There will be opportunities for those not familiar with this wonderful genre to learn about the many worldwide bands -- their names, their music, their live performances. I am so damn excited about this, and will probably begin a thread real soon, as early as late October, or early November, at the latest.

There is no 'right or wrong' about all of what's being discussed here, IMHO. I am encouraged at how the discussion is so civil and healthy, and that the 'range' of what people think about 'surf music' is so broad. I like to keep in mind, as Ivan points out, that an opinion is, essentially, something 'personal', and that one does not automatically have to subscribe to someone else's 'view'.

This is ALL why SG101 is such a fantastic forum! (God Bless Brian!!)

Thx 'Baron' for kick-starting this discussion

If you read my next paragraph, you'll see that I don't either, and that I don't think it should be PC-I'm just saying that if there are MORE blatant examples now, I would like to know...

I've seen some pretty violent drumming from Dusty and others. "Pounding Surf" implies physical damage. ok, I'll stop.

Sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll, it isn't just a saying, it's a way of life. The mass appeal of music is somewhat how it resembles sex and drugs. In more innocent times, before birth control pills became omnipresent, surf music was risque. Surfers wore only skimpy swimsuits (sexy!) and the music had more energy than previous music (drug-like stimulant).

The Beatles & Stones & Hendrix rolled in as birth control pills did and everything changed. Sex and drugs were much heavier, and so was the rock-n-roll. And things have kept on going down the same road, so much so that rock-n-roll is largely replaced by rap and hip-hop with lewd and violent lyrics.

Pop music is supposed to be popular. Once it becomes formerly popular it's not popular music, it's a relic, like an Edsel car. Purists can collect relics and love them, no harm done, but if you want your music to be popular you have to be faddish or your music does.

to me therein lies the rub and the topic of this post/thread.

Surf Music as a fad is here and gone with the first wave to be reborn/redone/reinfluenced with each following wave.
Which was/is the better "Surf Music" well that is up to the listener I guess and as a listener there is some of each waves stuff I just don't care for.

Two examples are the beloved "Astronauts" other than the first LP they sound like a cover band with reverb added cuz reverb was cool at the time. The other is "MOAM" just never did care for them.

I missed the SG101con but did get to see some great and 1 (what I thought) not so great bands/band at the Sunday at the peir show.
For anyone that missed the Sunday show it seemed to me the only "Surfy" influence that was missing was Spooky.

I see this thread as an extension of the "Surf..True Genre or "Sub-Genre" ?

Surf > Genre
Then you have all the surf influenced Sub's. Trad, Vocal, Spooky, Hot Rod, Punk, Metal and so on and on.

As a "Surf Music" consumer I own several of the bands that post here and enjoy them all other wise I wouldn't have spent my hard earned dollar on their music.
But I want my "Surf Music" to be just that "Surfy".
I want it to make me roll down the car window and smell the salt in the air, feel the sun on my face on my way to the green room.
When I'm a 1000 miles from the beach when its dumping snow.

"Classical" music has evolved immensely, however... The point to where it has evolved is beyond enjoyable for casual music fans. I think it is brilliant, but it is something I would never put on if other people were in the room. Surf music is in no danger of evolving to that point anytime soon though.

Jake, I'm going to use this as an example from the other side.

From my music history classes, 'Classical' is as much a style as 'surf'. To say that classical music has evolved is simply incorrect. And just like the label surf, classical is sued by people to mean a much wider variety of music than the label actually encompasses. Heck, to my teacher, Stravinsky wasn't classical. Just because it's played by a symphony doesn't make it classical (nor 'pops' either).

Sure, music has evolved, but that doesn't mean, to the music historian, that a particular style has evolved.
