good topic baron!!!!! gear question for you---are those tenor saxes? i don't play type of reed instrument, so i was just wondering what type of sax these guys are using. i'm just guessing tenor, hence the question. —Enjoying the surf,sun and sand!! |

Had to consult an expert to answer your question, so I just got off the phone with Jim Frias. He tells me that the tenor sax was the preferred instrument for surf if there was just one player. In bands that had two saxes there was typically and tenor and an alto. In the Nocturnes he was the alto but now he plays a tenor. —BOSS FINK "R.P.M." available now from DOUBLE CROWN RECORDS! |

don't forget the soprano sax in Dave Meyers and the Surftones, especially in "Moment of Truth". That guy actually made it sound good, like a snake charmers horn.

It looks a bit like Kenny's playing it with his nose. I have a nephew who can play two recorders simultaneously that way. Band geeks have their own little amusements. You tell saxes apart fairly easily in pictures (even if you are gear-impaired like me) by looking at the neck and the keys on the bell and the relative size of the body and bell or of the sax to the player. Unfortunately, the bend (bow?) of the neck on tenors is somewhat variable. http://www.allproducts.com/musical/cadeson/28-a902s.html Thanks for this thread, by the way, Norm. Yeah, sorry. I couldn't find anything better quickly. The real problem is telling the sounds apart in recordings. I assume it's obvious after a little first hand experience or if you can listen to labelled recordings for a while but I lack all that. I think I can tell a baritone, but there aren't many to tell. |
