You could go moderately high-tech, and try to match the subject of a new post against the existing threads, and then redirect them to a page that says "Did you mean to post that over here?"

You won't have 100% success, but looking for particular keywords (which you can modify as-needed) will probably reduce the creation of duplicate threads by a significant number.

How about using tags? These could then be displayed when posting (or reading) and would provide a sort of instant search. Perhaps the tags could be generated automatically, or from the subjects found in the wiki.

Obviously I need to make it easier to search. I think putting a search button on the new topic form that becomes available after the user has typed in the subject of the new topic should do the trick. A message should pop up and say "Hey would you like to search for previous topics first?".

An anonymous friend also suggested it should be a bit snarky: "Hey I noticed you are creating gear topic that is really redundant and boring. Maybe you should get a clue and/or a life. Say, have you ever heard any "surf music"? You might like it! That's really why we are here you know."

Sorry Brian.

Well that was a strange bump! Did I miss something?

Since this thread was started there is now a search field on the new thread form.
