Permalink Pipeline Tremolo effect?

New Topic

Does the original recording of Pipeline utilize harmonic tremolo? You can plainly hear throbbing at the beginning before the music starts…

Was the effect used on the guitars or keyboard?

I just listened. To tell the truth I’ve never heard that sound when listening in the past.
My guess is it it a reverb unit being shaken.

I would guess not. I think that effect was only available on the pro line of Fender amps and I don't think those guys had high end equipment when they recorded this.

I think the tremolo is only on the Wurli and that was probably a 140, which has its own built-in tremolo. Maybe we're just hearing the latent noise of its amp and speaker at the start?

Actually, here's a previous thread on the subject. Looks like it may have been a Wurliter 112.

So maybe they were running it to a separate amplifier and using the tremolo from that. Either way, it doesn't sound like harmonic tremolo to me.

It was probably in the keyboard, and I doubt that they would want to have had two tremolos running at the same time. I would imagine that would be hard to synchronize.

To my ears it sounds like harmonic tremolo when I listen to the stereo version where everything is a bit clearer... Like they ran the Wurlitzer through a separate amp.

You can hear what sounds like harmonic tremolo on the lead guitar in "Wayward Nile" from their first album.
