Happy Sunday, surf-heads.
Was having a poke around and couldn't seem to find a SG101 Spotify playlist on the forum here or on Spotify itself. Just wondered if there was any interest in making one? Happy to do so myself.
Being new to the forum I'm not sure if it's something I'd have to run by admins/mods? Would it be uncouth as there are multiple (incredible and wonderful) radio shows that members submit to?
As I said, happy to set one up if people want to send me links. If SG101 would rather I didn't use the SG101 name, that's totally fine, can just call it something else.
If people wanna send me their links all the same for a playlist, we can make a call on whether it goes public or stays private depending on how people feel about it, but happy to share the playlist with anyone that wants it.
Cheers
NTE.

I don’t know how much older stuff is out there (haven’t looked, not (yet?) a regular user), but this thread [ LOST HEROES FROM THE DAWN OF SURF! ] was turned into a YouTube playlist at one point, IIRC. Seems several of the linked videos even on the first page aren’t there anymore so it might be kinda cool if that one could be recreated in Spotify.
I’ll defer to @Brian to weigh in on using SG101/Surf Guitar 101 naming (or not).

Now seems like a strange time to be doing anything on Spotify.
I’ve heard that they don’t pay the bands very much.

F*ck Spotify! Yeah, Spotify is convenient for consumers, but what they pay artists is criminally low. Most of the streaming platforms don't pay very well, but Spotify, along with YouTube, Pandora and Deezer are at the bottom on the barrel. Spotify pays $0.00318 per stream. Tidal is the best at $0.01284. Apple is at $0.00783.

Doesn't change the fact that artists, surf bands included, still post their music on Spotify.
The idea was basically to collate a playlist of SG101 members' bands in a playlist, but if there's no appetite that's all good.

In my experience, playing playlists on free Spotify works much better than attempting to play songs from a particular artist, and that's better than trying to play songs from a particular album. By better I mean fewer commercials and fewer songs outside what I'm trying to hear.
I made a 100-song playlist on Spotify of reverby guitar instrumentals I have heard many times and look forward to hearing again. It's called Rauta2 and my Spotify username is venshad. Searching on either one should bring up this playlist.

Spotify is alright, but I do think that there are better services out there. I use YouTube Music for it's on-demand capabilities. I already collect CDs and 45s so I can't justify paying for the premium service.

Regardless of service, as someone mentioned above, some stuff still isn't available to stream. You won't find Slacktone's stuff, only one of the Ghastly Ones CD's is available, and the Pyronauts only have two albums up, for example.
Sure I hear what you're saying. I was mainly aiming at building a playlist of unsigned, SG101 members/posters, just for fun and to have it all in one place if anyone wants to listen to it all together.

These problems are less severe if you use free Spotify in a web browser instead of the official app. You will be interrupted by commercials frequently, but you can at least listen to whole albums.
That being said, I only started using Spotify during the pandemic and have since discovered that it is not the right way of listening to music for me. I like to buy a particular album or pick something from my shelf, as ignorant as that may sound.
Also, I don't like how certain records sound in Spotify. When music is uploaded for streaming it is basically remastered, because the different levels and peaks of an album track would be problematic in a playlist. And that leads to some songs just sounding like garbage in the comparison with the CD or vinyl version.
But naturally, all of my band's music is on spotify, never the less.

That is true when using a web browser on a laptop. I was referring to using the Spotify app on a cellphone. I listen through a stereo or full-range headphones via bluetooth. I hadn't tried free Spotify thru a cellphone browser.

I encourage you to create your own Spotify playlist of the bands you find on SG101 that sound interesting to you. If you could somehow label it as bands you found on SG101 and not an official SG101 endorsed list then that would be better.
