Hi all, newbee here.
I'm thinking of getting a Surfybear metal and was wondering if I can power it with my Voodoo Labs PP2+ supply. It can power an Effectrode compressor by using a current doubling cable in the 5 and 6 outputs and that requires 12v 600ma. The Surfybear pedal is 12v and although the company suggest a 1000ma supply it only actually requires 500ma. So in theory this should work right?
How do you power yours?

I believe it will work. In my case, I run my DIY Surfy Bear build as a battery powered unit with a Portable Charger 25800mAh Power Bank and a USB 5V to 9V or 12V Step Up Cable Adjustable DC to Dc Transformer Converter with Switch (5V-9/12V). I get 10+ hours of use out of a full charge. The current out of the step up transformer is 12V 600-800Amh.

Yamaha makes a keyboard power supply that's a match. I think it's the PA130.
Bonus: it also works on Celestron NexStar telescopes!

I have a SurfyBear Metal and a PP2+ but I use the included powersupply plugged into the convenience outlet on the PP2+. My 250mA outs are already spoken for (Echoplex and Strymon Flint).
Surfy Industries support though did tell me I SHOULD be ok using a current doubler cable on outs 5&6, but also you need to use a polarity reverse cable to make it center positive.
So, these two cables should do it..

I run mine from a One Spot Pro CS7 (a 12v output, obviously). It works fine.

Thanks for that. Yeah I have both those cables already for powering my Effectrode compressor. I was thinking of using the current doubler cable that i have and using it in conjunction with the 12v mini jack cable that comes with the PP2+ because that cable is already polarity reversed. Don't the Surfy Bear pedals use a mini jack power plug? Either way...one or other should work I think.

It will only work on a PP2 if you use the power outlet in the back.

It is a plug in for a regular power cable.

Ah ok...just been looking into it. Never realised how the courtesy socket worked. Great stuff...many thanks.

+1 Just make sure to use the ‘red’ reverse polarity converter.

ArtS, glad you got an included one. For anyone else, my Yamaha recommendation is USA-based. It's $15 and widely available.

How do you power yours?
A PP2+ cannot power a Surfybear. You can use the outlet in the rear, but you need to use the included power supply. I would be careful underpowering a pedal. While you can sometimes get the pedal to work, you can damage the internal circuitry when doing so. This is especially true with higher current pedals that have any non-analog function, even if it is just the switching. There are three factors to consider when powering a Surfybear:
- 12 volts
- Center positive (this is non-standard and usually requires a specialty cable)
- 1 amp (or 1000 milliamperes/Ma) of current
Number 3 is where most power supplies fall short. The only way I know of to power a Surfybear right off a power supply is with the new Cioks New Power Generation supplies. Each outlet (the make a 4/7/8 outlet units) is selectable for 9/12/15/18 volts. At 12 volts it provides 500 Ma. They sell Ma doubling cables as well as center positive cables. So you can combine two outlets at 500 Ma into a polarity reverse cable and viola. Plus the things are really small. I think the 4-outlet supply has about the same footprint as a Boss pedal and is only an inch tall. They fit under Pedaltrains, even the Nanos.

I just use the power supply that came with it. So far, so good!

Yeah i think I'm just gonna use its own power supply...maybe via the courtesy outlet on the back of the pp2+.
thanks for the input all
