As big fans of the so-called "brownface" Fender® amplifiers of the early 60s (1960-1963), Surfy Industries wanted to be able to capture that sound with the minimum amount of controls. And so, the BROWNFACER was born! Limited availability starting tomorrow as this is in a test phase.
The Brownfacer emulates the special "fat effect" that is obtained by pushing the tubes and the volume of a brownface Fender® Showman® just before distortion. It finds that "sweet spot" of maximum tube compression that changes the entire sound-from the power of your sound to the sustain of the guitar and the reverb. The Brownfacer is perfect for the gigging artist who appreciates that sound or is used to playing through one of those old amplifiers. As we know, for live shows and touring, you can be presented with different backline amps and traveling lighter and avoiding bringing a brownface amplifier on the road is always a plus. It saves you money and your back! With the Brownfacer you are secure in knowing you can get the sound you need from any amplifier, even the coldest ones, with affordable ease and portability.
Each of the 25 Brownfacers are signed and numbered by our creative mastermind Bjorn Isheden. Only available directly through our website starting tomorrow, Feb. 3 at noon EST!

Looking forward to hearing this pedal on a Quilter amp. Might be just the ticket to Tone-Town!

When I hear "sound enhancer", I immediately think of "sentence enhancer" from one of the best ever Spongebob episodes, Sailor Mouth.
That being said, Bjorn does great work, so I expect this to be quite useful.

I ordered the Compact as soon as it went live yesterday.
Excited about two mixers and the decay control when compared to my DIY kit.
Also excited to be able to free up some space on my board and cut down on the amount/length of cables I was running... and this will free up my boost pedal as well!

I am very interested in the "Brownfacer," but I am concerned about it being in a test phase. Will the final product be of a higher quality and/or more polished?
Update - Went to their website to buy it, and it was already sold out. Think they will have more by summer?

We hope to have some more soon, long before summer. The non-test phase version will not be higher quality per se, but if user suggestions warrant it there may be small changes or additions. Then again, there is not much else that can be added. Some people are concerned that there is no on/off switch, but our point of view is that if you are using it, you should want it on at all times since it is not an effect pedal, but an amp enhancer.

What about making the LEDs different colors for mix 1 and mix 2 on the SurfyBear Compact? From the demos I’ve seen it looks like both are red. Not a big deal but it would be a nice touch IMO.

I totally respect what you mean. If I bought one, I would end up putting it through a TB loop switcher. Even with an always on effect, it is helpful to take stock as to what/how my tone is being enhanced. It will be easier to sell because reviewers will put the pedal inline and say, "well, it enhances the tone...you just gotta trust me!". I mean no disrespect. But clicking it on and off to A/B the effect gives people the chance to truly assess the value of that enhancement. Furthermore, the degree of presence and attenuation needed is important when playing through different amps, different stage volumes, and venues/sound environment. I use a Kingsley Page tube boost and you can safely bet that I have to tweak it, assess the tone with and without it.
But that's just how I roll. This does explain why I backed out of ordering one today.

Even though the first 25 have already sold, I should clarify why we called it a "test-phase". We were headed to the NAMM Show and really wanted to introduce them there, but the timing put us in a tight spot, so we didnt have a lot of time to fully check them out beforehand (Bjorn brought them with him in his suitcase). But I should say here that Bjorn has really outdone himself on this pedal. We are already receiving extremely positive feedback from those who already have one and it has definitely passed the test! The fact that they are hand-numbered and signed on the inside by Bjorn shows his confidence in the Brownfacer, plus there are always those customers who want the hand signed and numbered limited first run.

I would have loved to jump on the initial rollout Ted however, I'm being bled dry with prototyping and patent submissions of totally unrelated matters at the moment. I'll jump on at some point!

Alright guys I come in to tell you my opinion since the Brownfacer was born from my idea and Bjorn was immediately excited about realizing this.
the Brownfacer does what the description says. Nothing more, nothing less. It makes the sound fat. For some of you it will be too fat. Especially is you have Jazzmaster used with both pickups. If you use the bridge pickup on a strat you will have the sound of Dick Dale.
Why no switch? Simple: either you like it or not. It has to be places before the amp. Forget loops. Forget excessive thinking. Just plug it and play. This is component of you AMP, not your pedalboard. The only control is the presence knob, a “symbol” of Brownfacer amps. The attenuation is to reduce the input volume if your pickups are too hot, because there is a compression stage inside the effect that could be overdriven to distortion. Instead this thing recreate the sound of a 6G14 at maximum tube compression before distortion.
Demo: we have no video demo yet because I have had no time to do it. This character pedal is so particular that it cannot be explained with a video. The camera will never get what it does, I will try soon but don’t expect to be blown away by a video of the Brownfacer. You need live action, apeaker, volume, room and you need the guitar in YOUR hands.
Some of you asks about the test phase. Also here you think too much. We said it’s a test phase because we need the opinion of people to see if this is really a sellable product or not. I thought it was a so particular thing that nobody would even understand what it does. Instead it’s now sold out, after 2 hours since we launched it.
So the test phase is finished because people bought it.
Wait for new ones to come available.
Put it this way: if you play like the Lively Ones you will not like this. If you already have a Showman, you don’t need this. If you play like Dick Dale you will love this. If you travel and it happens you have to use a shit small amp with no balls and thin sound, this saves your ass.

Cool, I'll pick one up when the new batch are ready. I do agree very much with shake'n'stomp that a switch would allow for A/B which may help show it off. I see myself unplugging it and replugging it to hear the difference.

Well, I definitely want to buy one... I do however agree with the others, an on/off switch would be nice. Also, when did Ted start working for Surfy Industries?!

Ted, I've bothered Bjorn so much over the years with technical questions, maybe you could chase this one down. What would happen to the signal if a Y splitter or an A/B and both switch was used on the output side of this. In other words, is there a degradation of the signal. Yes, two amps are better than 1. It's one lauda!

Hi Ted and Lorenzo, Is there any talk of in the future making a surfy bear reverb pedal that is essentially just the reverb “kit” that would allow you to use an existing reverb pan from an amp? E.g. plug the RCA cables from the pan in the amp to the “reverb pedal” and then the pedal can plug into the front of the amp.
