Copyrights and Royalties of cover songs. How is it done?

How do surf bands legally go about selling their own CDs that have songs written and produced by other groups on them? I think the Harry Fox Agency in the US is involved in this. https://www.harryfox.com You need a mechanical license, I believe. A license in Canada is about $50 per song for up to 500 copies. The last time I did it, it was 9 cents per copy per song. But that was something like 15 years ago. I was handling online distribution for a musician friend and I insisted that he properly license the cover songs on his album. 1 was easy as he had the information. I wasn't too hard as I got the information after contacting the original musician's website. The third was a pain because my musician didn't have the information. I ended up asking CDBaby for the information from another cover version of the song. It's painful if you don't know the actual name of the song and it's authors. Top
