Permalink Copyrights and Royalties of cover songs. How is it done?

My surf band is kicking around the idea of making a cd of surf tunes by other bands. How do surf bands legally go about selling their own CDs that have songs written and produced by other groups on them?

If there's an easy "one stop shop" website that blankets all Bmi/Ascap copyrights...tell me please.

There is one in Canada. I think the Harry Fox Agency in the US is involved in this. https://www.harryfox.com You need a mechanical license, I believe. A license in Canada is about $50 per song for up to 500 copies. Not sure what the US rate is.

They have a huge database of all songs registered by the writers and publishers. If you want cover Harry Mancini or other gig names, it might cost you, sometimes quite a bit, but I bet most surf songs are pretty affordable or might not even be in there, in which case you should at least credit the writers on your release.

The rate for a mechanical license is the same regardless of composer/publisher. The last time I did it, it was 9 cents per copy per song. But that was something like 15 years ago.

I was handling online distribution for a musician friend and I insisted that he properly license the cover songs on his album. 1 was easy as he had the information. I wasn't too hard as I got the information after contacting the original musician's website. The third was a pain because my musician didn't have the information. I ended up asking CDBaby for the information from another cover version of the song.

It's painful if you don't know the actual name of the song and it's authors.
