Hi Delrin96mm Welcome to surfguitar101 & the world of surf music ! These are some of the earliest "guitar instrumentals" I ever learned (but this was back in 1964). Try:
"Pipeline" by the Chantays (the whole Pipeline LP is also a good place to start)
"Guitar Twist" by the Ventures
"Walk Don' Run 64'" by the Ventures
"Batman" ("Movin'" Re-titled) by the Surfaris
"Wipe Out" by the Surfaris
"Moon Dawg" by the Gamblers, Beach Boys or Davie Allan & the Arrows
"Bulldog" & "Torquqy" by the Fireballs and "Penetration" by the Pyramids Hope these help.

Some easy starters are:
Surf Rider
Squad Car
Calhoun Surf by Los Straitjackets

These have tabs if you need them. There are also tabs here: https://surfguitar101.com/downloads/category/tablature/title/

I found surf guitar was a significant learning curve to playing the guitar. The emphasis is on the picking hand more than flashy dexterity of the fingerboard hand. Much less bending and more bursts of picking. Suddenly, plectrums become really, really important and personal. (There are epic threads about plectrums on here!)

Penetration by The Pyramids
Our Favourite Martian by Bobby Fuller Four

I will add what I was starting with, besides above mentioned
Surf Beat by Dick Dale
Mr Moto by The Belairs
Diamond Head by The Ventures (however I prefer Huevos Rancheros version)))
Car Hop by Los Straitjackets
Hotel Loneliness by Link Wray
Storm Surf by The Surfaris
Three Blue Stars by Yuzo Kayama
Bombora by Coffin Daggers ( or it’s Surfaris originally?) not the Atlantics one
The Hearse by the Astronauts

Do not hesitate ask here or in private messages, ten year ago a lot of poeple helped me here a lot in many ways. Best forum ever)

Rumble by Link Wray (backing track on this site)
Apache by The Shadows

I'd recommend you get Audacity for your computer. It's pretty easy software to learn, and it's free. You can slow a song down to help in learning and you can loop through a section for practicing the tougher parts.

If I'd stop buying old guitars to fix, I might actually learn to play.

Check out Bruce Lindquist’s surf guitar lessons on YouTube.
He has a lot of good lessons and is easy to follow.

Best of luck and welcome to the forum. Definitely one
Of the best websites on the net, regardless of topic.

Yup. The first song The Mystery Men? ever played! GREAT for getting into this genre.

Penetration is one of the first songs the Reverbivores played as well. It's such a good tune, though, that it remains in the setlist, even when we have to pare down for time restraints.

The Reverbivores - we're local favorites!

I’ve aways shyed away from the classics because EVERYONE plays them, whether in a punk rock band, a bar band, a garagey thing or whatever.
As far as surf classics go, I think the only ones that are in regular rotation are astronauts tunes.

So, my go to’s are firewater and smurf party.

And now for a shameless plug:
Try playing along and recording yourself with my live, drums-only backing tracks of "Walk, Don't Run", Walk, Don't Run and "Baja", - and tracks by many other members here, over in the "Downloads" section.
As a drummer, familiarizing myself with these commonly-played classic surf "standards" has helped me be prepared to sit in, jump in, jam and sub with some of the other surf bands here in our local Connecticut surf community.
Fun stuff! -Dick

Delrin,

Glad you’re enjoying Bruce’s lessons, I know I’ve found them to be very informative and helpful, plus Bruce just seems to know how to present the material well. Congrats on your progress and keep working on those chops. And most important, keep coming back to the best website on the internet. You won’t find a better or more supportive bunch of folks anywhere than you will here.

More cowbell?? Nah...More Reverb!!
