One of the great recurring tragedies in life is that appreciation often isn't realized until it's too late. But I think in his case, at the very least, he had a pretty good idea how valued he was. Night after night he would support live music, in a time when most bands get lucky to have a few friends show up let alone any sizeable crowd. So he was certainly noticed and appreciated. And for many of these bands, his photo shares were there only non-self-generated exposure. I would see his posts constantly in my FB feed, and I saw many times that the bands were actively thankful to him for his contributions and support. At the surf shows and conventions, he wasn't the only super fan, nor the only one taking photos and videos. But he was a regular. A veteran. A fellow reverb junkie that feasted and reveled with us in our plethora of guitar rituals and our week long instro-bacchanalia. A surf family member who did more than just show up at our reunions: he contributed in many ways. When we get together every year for the convention weekend, it's impossible to hang out with each person as much as you want. There just isn't enough time. But he was one of the people I always made sure to visit with while "making my rounds". A handshake. An "its really good to see you!". A quick catch-up. An exchange of opinions on the bands/performances. A shared stoking of that reverb loving fire within all in attendance, a fire that burns all year long. His fire will be missed this year. Greatly. The after life is a mystery. Nobody knows anything for certain. But I can't shake this feeling that if he didn't know how valued he was in life, he knows now. He will certainly know when literally dozens of bands will play in his honor this weekend. They will all return his many years of service when they all spend their time and energy and creativity supporting him for one long epic music-filled weekend. RIP Tuck. Enjoy your memorial shows! PS: That is some excellent show art! Thanks for sharing it |

BEAUTIFULLY put, Josh! He was one of the first people I met and talked to at my first convention in 2009. I was always glad to see him there and when I saw him at Instro Summit on my side of the country I was thrilled all over again. He will definitely be missed. A treasure indeed. —

Maybe we can do something to honor John at this year's convention? Any ideas? Nice post Josh, thanks. I completely agree. —Site dude - S3 Agent #202 "It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea |

Wow! What a day! There was a huge turnout all day long. 12 bands, including 4 instro bands. John would have been in beside himself with happiness. It was fantastic. The Aquasonics The Von Hodads —"You can't tell where you're going if you don't know where you've been" |
