Worth it x1000; I have an AV65 that I adore but it's prone to the occasional chip - an example of one that wasn't allowed proper time between and to finish. (Yes, I did make a bit of a stink about it but their solution is to retrieve the body & shoot a new/different body & send it back. The guitar sounds soooooooo good I'm loathe to change bodies so will just live with it.)

Bob,
that Tele is gorgeous!
Is that a 2" spiral cutter you're suing to clean up the body after cutting?
How do you like it and what speed are running it at?
I use one for the same purpose but can't seem to find the optimum speed and it can be cantankerous and dangerous. Works like a charm when it works.
Cheers,
Jeff

Thanks! It sounds like an early 60's Tele to me. I'm quite pleased with how the pickups turned out. Bridge pickup is clean, clear & twangy. Neck pickup is clean, clear & smooth. I use a 4-way switch so it kinda sounds like a humbucker in the fourth position. It's got some punch & growl in fourth position.

Thanks Jeff! Yes, that is a 2" spiral upcut bit. I've been using them for a few years now & I won't go back to straight bits. I love it, but it always makes me nervous! I route my necks with it as well. (& pucker the whole time! )
If memory serves, I think I'm running it at or near 20,000rpm for most hardwoods. I'll back it down a bit if I'm cutting soft woods.
Luckily, it hasn't given me any problems. I do know that if you run it in a router table, you must use the "upcut" bit. In an overarm router you would use the "downcut". I never downhill route with this bit. I always feed the piece into the bit & I don't stop feeding until I've gone all the way around. And I cut or sand right up to my pencil line before I route so the least amount of stress possible is put on the bit. I've cut ash, alder, pine, cherry, walnut, teak, oak, maple, cypress, mahogany & rosewood with it. The results have always been consistent.

Once again not surf guitar related but a '63 Johnson 18 hp outboard motor with bad exhaust cover gaskets........
Don't ya just hate that?
There is however a '62 Showman head sitting on the stool next to the work bench awaiting replacement tube grabbers for the output stage, a bit of rewiring of said output stage, and a bit of tweaking to make it really roar.
We'll get it done Rich.

This just got a re-do and a quick and dirty (really) paint job for the Convention.
We moved the neck, pickups and bridge into the body further to help with balance compared to the picture on pg. 13 of this thread.
It's still a prototype and it's no '63 Johnson 18 hp but it sounds great and is fun to play.
Bob, thanks for the input on the cutter. I'm using the same one.
Cheers,
Jeff

Geeez Badge, and I thought we were buds............
When it comes to outboard motors, I'm not discriminatory. I have three ole 'Rudes and an Elto in the basement.
If the top half burns fossil fuel, the bottom half goes down in the water and it has a propeller on it, it's good by me.
Jeff, I can arrange a little kicker for your man cave....... One can not have too many toys.
Your friend,
Merky John-Rude

He Badge, I know that.
Actually Evinrudes have always been my favorite. Mechanically the same as their Johnson brothers but I've always had a warm fuzzy for the E-rude's stylings.
Got a couple of ole Merkies down in the "Boatwerx" as well, a KG-7H and a Mk-20H.
I have a '39 Johnson 2 1/2 that I got in 1958. For some reason I took it apart years ago and I am still trying to find all those damn parts. It's the one I've had the longest and ties the '39 Elto Pal for oldest in my assemblage. Rescued the Pal from a scrap pile headed for the aluminum recycle crusher in 1968.
I love toys.........

Yeah, just fun. I give grief because we have one guy in our bass club who swears by them even as he keeps taking his motor back 3-4x /yr to fix the same old thing (and sometimes this is "won't start"). In this case we're talking beaucoup bak-sheesh sahib. Damn near 1/3 of the cost of these floating fiberglas barges is the motor, which said money would buy me a Cessna 150, or at least a good vintage motorcycle. Besides, nowadays little is made that is intended for a mortal human to work on.
Gotta find me an old 60's/70's IH Scout or an original Bronco or something... ya know, back when an engine was an engine.
Curmudgeon, Out.

Oh, so you want to toss money in the trash can eh? That Cessna 150 will do it my good man. I got the wild hair to go flying back in the 80's. Had always wanted to and on a visit to a local small airport with a co-worker who was taking lessons, I made the mistake of accompanying him into the FBO's office where I made the second mistake of commenting that I had always wanted to learn. A guy standing there heard me and remarked "always wanted to, huh?" "Yeah, sometime maybe." "Well......how about now?" We obviously did not make it back to the office in our "allotted lunch hour."
I realized after about 150 hours that I would be a much happier camper if I chucked the Orville Wright thing and bought Mrs. Katcher a new house. Probably a wise decision in the long run. I do get calls from some friends who are current and just baiting me to climb back in the cockpit.
Some of the most fun I've ever had was getting rowdy in a bud's Grumman Tiger.
We need to change the subject.

Ditto. After 850 hrs real life got in the way.
Now returning to tubes & strings & wood & stuff.

850 Hours! Wow, great work. I did take about five minutes of a two hour introduction to basic aerobatics lesson once. We did one loop.
We have a surf music bud here in Atlanta, Jet Powers, who flew Re-fueling tankers for the Air Force. He retired and took off with the airlines. Couldn't get enough of it I guess.
I do miss it though. Just before I retired two years ago, I remarked to the Mrs. that I thought I'd build an untralight.......... That did't go over so well. There's still time though.
