If you're looking for more of the original sound I have a suggestion Cheers, Jeff Yes it's a poplar slab. Tulipwood in particular. It's easy to work with and not as soft as bass wood. You have to be very careful with a router because it tends to chip at places where the grain is short. It's quite sensitive to humidity changes so once it's dry and planed you might want to seal it before the weather changes. We got a pair of lookalike humbuckers from China. Not exactly the stuff Harmonies are made from but we weren't after the original sound to begin with. My son is more into pop so he wanted to try something a bit hotter. We'll try the pickups first and if we don't like them we can always rewind them or swap them for a better pair. But thanks for the offer! (I've done a bit of reading and it seems tulipwood is called a kind of poplar but it isn't related to real poplar.:hmmm: confused? I am.) Top

JCStilley Joined: Jan 28, 2016 Posts: 37 Omaha, NE.	Posted on Jun 20 2016 11:30 AM I have a strat partscaster that has been on the shelf for a few years. Now I'm in the process of reviving it. First, I stripped off the original paint. Then sanded it down to the bare wood to get rid of the obnoxiously thick sealer coat. But before all of that, I discovered that the neck pocket was 3/4" deep. So I had to take a 1/8" thick veneer and cut it to fit. then that was glued in. Now the neck pocket is 5/8" deep; just as Leo Fender intended. For the grain filling process, I did that with a slurry of sanding dust and egg whites. Yes, you read that correctly. Egg whites. Yes, I was skeptical at first. But it really did work. Now I just need to get some sanding sealer and then paint it. The neck that came with it was also a total cluster. It was 1-3/4" wide at the nut and too thin for me. I never did like the way it felt. So I got a new neck off of ebay for $25. And it is to vintage specs. It came as a 22 fret neck, so I removed that and now it's a 21 fret. Personally, I'm really liking how the rosewood board looks. But over time, I'll probably refret and redo the radius. When that happens, I'll probably do a bone nut too. But for now, I just want to make it playable. Top
