Keep surfing

It is never too late

Probably the wrong thread, but could someone please tell me how to make that high pitched noise on the low E string like Jerry McGee does? I have been trying to do it, but can't seem to make the same noise that he does. Right now, I have the factory 9's on my new strat. Confused

Hey there SixStringSurfer- I joined 101 yesterday so I don't know any of the rules but I'll bet you'll get a lot of people telling you to go to heavier strings. I personally don't buy anything lighter than 11's any more and have at least one of my Danelectros strung with 13's. Scraping the edge of your pick on the heavy strings makes some noise. I don't know the Jerry Mcgee move that you are talking about. There's got to be some old pro's out there who know what to tell you.

Oh and I'm going to cover Suki Nanda by Japanese garage band the Cougars and then do a cover of Submission by the Sex Pistols.

Can you give us an example from YouTube? My guess is that you're talking about a natural harmonic - you get that sound by very lightly touching the string exactly above the 5th or 7th fret, and removing your finger immediately so let the string ring out. But show us an example and we should be able to tell you more definitively.

Ivan's not without a sense of humor either; this could get interesting.

Right now working on some Pete Anderson stuff; mostly to clear the head, and do some remedial training for the pinkie.

Hi guys, thanks for all the replies. If you Google "Ventures live Japan 1990" and in the first video that pops up (1/5) go to the 4:15 or the 6:00 minute mark. I've been trying but still can't make the same noise he does. Thanks guys!

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.....
you mean whistling up the Indian ponies?
As also done by Nokie in this vid here with a very young Peter Frampton?.

Sorry to say, this is just one of those things that takes practice, but easily done. The string (should be a wound one, low E or A) is muted down below and you just brush or whisk your right hand finger tip (or left if southpaw) briefly over the string near the pickup's polepiece. The vid link above has a close up of Nokie doing this. (Sounds different, he was in a humbucker mood there for a bit.)

Clear as mud?

"Adios Sancho" by Los Corornas, "Eastwood Outlaw" by Crazy Aces, and a guitar duet version of "Streets of Bakersfield". (Do I really need a Tele for "Streets"? Big Grin )

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

Thanks too Badger- I've seen this technique used by Jr. Brown but forgot it till now. Gotta learn how to do that!
I finished my cover of that Sex Pistols song. Pretty happy with it. It's kinda blah from the 30 to 45 second mark but other than that. I tried to include the link. First time so I'll probably wif it. Here goes nothin!

That's the same technique- he's just getting a higher pitched tone. It's the mystery of the humbuckers. We need Ivan here to settle this.

Just use your right-hand fingernail to scratch the string. It's really not difficult, there's no skill required for it.
