I personally don't buy anything lighter than 11's any more and have at least one of my Danelectros strung with 13's. Scraping the edge of your pick on the heavy strings makes some noise. I don't know the Jerry Mcgee move that you are talking about. My guess is that you're talking about a natural harmonic - you get that sound by very lightly touching the string exactly above the 5th or 7th fret, and removing your finger immediately so let the string ring out. If you Google "Ventures live Japan 1990" and in the first video that pops up (1/5) go to the 4:15 or the 6:00 minute mark. I've been trying but still can't make the same noise he does. As also done by Nokie in this vid here with a very young Peter Frampton?. Sorry to say, this is just one of those things that takes practice, but easily done. The string (should be a wound one, low E or A) is muted down below and you just brush or whisk your right hand finger tip (or left if southpaw) briefly over the string near the pickup's polepiece. The vid link above has a close up of Nokie doing this. (Sounds different, he was in a humbucker mood there for a bit.)
