Ginza Lights. Pretty easy to work out but still needs a little polish.

I think my favorite surf songs of all time is are Church Key by The Centurions and Tranquilizer by The Lively Ones. I want to learn these two some day, but since I am struggling with the core basics (Pipeline, Penetration, Walk Don't Run) I'll put it on hold. I wouldn't even know where to start... (having troube playing by ear).

LOL - retraction - like Church Key so much I forgot the band. The Surftones. The Centurions version is not even close. Forgiveness begged for.

Church Key was originally by the pre-surf band The Revels. You should check out their compilation on SunDazed if you haven't already.

"It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea

thanks for the tip! I am a record collector so I always appreciate a lead on something I have missed!

The entire Walk, Don't Run lp for the upcoming Guitar-Fest V on Friday, May 8.

It's the annual appearance of the Fabulous Venturamas. To date we've covered The Fabulous Ventures, In Space, & Surfing..

'all my lovin' by the beatles, rhythm and lead fills, plus the vocals as a guitar part. i know it's not surf but i've still got the reverb cranked up.

I've always said that if you use enough reverb and throw in a little whammy action, anything you play becomes a surf song!

My band is currently working on several new songs, but right now at the top of the list is "Hawaii 5-0". It seems like at every gig we play, someone requests that song. Besides, it is a fun song.

Our newest title is 'Kitsune', a Japanese fox spirit !
Good titles are tough, they are the one shot at a 'lyric' that you get when playing instrumentals!

Just started on The Mermen's "Scalp Salad". (Thank you SG101 podcast episode #2!)
Still trying to figure out how different it is from Surf Coaster's "Breakout". Certainly some similarities. Is "Breakout" just a different arrangement of the same basic tune? (Oops - that's getting off-topic.)
{edit - Later, now that I'm more familiar with "Scalp Salad", I see that "Breakout" is very different.}

I've been working on perfecting our latest 2 songs ~ our bass player's songwriting can be fairly challenging at times. I told him he writes "scientist surf".

Isn't that a sub-genre of "Math Rock"? Wink

I'm not a complete idiot. Some parts are missing.

Let's hope not. However, I seem to do a lot more "counting" with his songs as they are not natural to my playing or writing inclinations. I probably need to go back and review my Schoolhouse of Rock videos.

i'm working on getting 'wataridori' by the surf coasters up to speed and getting the phrasing all correct.

I hear the word "phrasing" a lot, what exactly does that mean? I assume it has to do with not only playing the right notes but in the right time?

more like with the right 'feeling' - the nuances that turn a mere string of notes into music.

If you think about a paragraph of text being read out loud, you'll realize that it's divided up into sentences and even parts of sentences by the way the reader reads. Phrasing is a bit like figuring out where the sentences are in a melody.

ahh, so basically "phrasing" is why when I play the intro to Black Magic Woman it sucks. LOL. I always wondered what phrasing meant, thanks gang. I'll figure it all out eventually...

Well just be careful that you don't confuse "It sucks" with "It doesn't sound like Carlos"... Phrasing, vibrato, muting, throwing in triplets... Things like that are areas where you get to be YOU. If you feel it differently than the original, and you like the way it sounds, it's not wrong.

Hey SurfHeads-

After playing classic rock and Blues for the last couple of years I am now pursuing my love of Surf Guitar so I am starting with the "First Wave" Classics- "Wipe Out", "Pipeline", Mr. Moto, .....

Its hard to find people to Jam Surf with- I am comfortable with playing the Chord's and being a 2nd or 3rd Guitar on many Surf Songs....its just the main riffs that I am still a Gremmie on-

Let me know if anybody in the Sacramento area is looking for another guitar to fill in the void...

Imagine if 3 people all read the same paragraph--a straight talking midwesterner, a fast talkin' New Yorker, and someone with a Kentucky drawl. They're all the same words, but delivered quite differently, with various twists, tones, and pauses.

I seriously doubt that Carlos could reproduce all of the nuances of the original recording.

Yeah, look at Joe Cocker. His cover tunes sound nothing like the originals. He totally makes them his own, and are in many cases as good as or better than the originals.
