0.11 daddario, you can bend it. Twisted Evil Twisted Evil loves daddario chrome 0.11-hard to bend g string........
4 surf bigger is better for instro-rock influenced-aka los straitjackets-0.11 is the-real thing. Twisted Evil

I use a DAdario 9-46 on my 2 strats (with a high action). This strings very cheap and acceptable quality.
i tryed 10 and 11, but it doesnt right for my style of playing (up to now). for example i like make bends at 1-st string (bbking style)...

I usually use D'Addario Chromes .012-.052 on my Strat. Right now I'm using a roundwound set just because it was all they had at my local store, but I prefer the extra "whump" from the flats.

Does anybody know of a 12 (or thicker) set that comes with an unwound G? Every once in a while I like to bend the G, but that doesn't work too well with a wound string. Sometimes I'll buy an extra plain string, but that's a bit of a pain.

Gotta put in a word for DR Pure Blues 12-52. I only wish they came in a 13 set.

These are not typical surf strings but I love them. I use a this type on about all of my guitars. If you have ever tried the Pyramid round wound set, they are dang near identical in tone and feel. And they last forever. They are probably similar also to the Rotosound Purple set mentioned earlier: a nice hand-wound, pure nickel wrap.

The Very Best String I Have EVER Used in 30 Years !! These strings are coated to prevent oxidizing. It is amazing to me how well they hold a tuning. A band we were opening for came to town and the lead player ask me where could he buy some Elixir strings. I had never heard of them at the time. One of our local music stores carried them and I too have been using them now for 6 years. I, like so many player have tried most every string on the market. ... Elixir, the BEST Strings Ever. (or so far) Try a set for yourself .. I think you will always be glad you did. Very Happy

Jim,
I know everyone has different tastes, and that's what makes the world go round. But I have to respectfully disagree with you on Elixirs. They shipped me a few different sets to try out - both acoustic and electric, and I found them to be some of the worst strings I'd ever played on. I thought the coating made sliding on strings a hell of a lot tougher, and found that it also made the strings sound incredibly dull. Especially on the acoustic, the coating started to wear off within a few weeks, and I found myself forced to change the strings after maybe 3-4 weeks, where I usually keep acoustic strings on for at least 6 months.

I'm glad to know that someone out there likes them, but I just had to put out a word of caution before everyone and their mom went out and tried out a set.

Anybody here use half-rounds? I've used D'Addario half-rounds (12's) on my Tele and really love them. I'm going to try them out of the Fender Cyclone II I just bought. I've found them smooth like flats with just enough edge to keep some clarity and twang of rounds...plus they sound better to my ear distorted than traditional flats.

I have a set on my Dano hodad. I have to say I was a little under-whelmed with them. I agree with you in that they sound better with a little distortion, but I also need to disagree with the "smoothness" that you talked about. Yes, after about seven months on my guitar, they finally got a bit smoother, but when I started playing with that set, it tore up my fingers unmerciful -- it was like using a fine sandpaper almost.

I will also give you a little tip... if you do really like them, do yourself a favor and pick up a dozen or so sets while you can; I hear that D'Addario is considering putting them on the chopping block because a lot of retailers are having trouble moving them. I honestly think it could have been a great product, but they didn't promote them enough when they first came out, and put a pretty sizey price tag on them when they first came out, before any buzz had been generated.

I've played a lot worse, but in my opinion, the strings just don't do what they SHOULD do quite well enough.

Yeah, I like the feel and sound of half-rounds the best.

Do the half-rounds sound more like rounds or flats or perfectly in-between? Lately I've been torn between flats and rounds. I like pretty much everything about flats except their sound on aggressive, distorted strumming and that they are occasioinally slippery. Wondering if I should try out some half-rounds.

I put some Fender steel Flats 11's on my Jag and man they are sweet!
Ill never go back to roundwound, they seem so archaic.

The half's sound brighter than any flats I've tried but they still seem more like flats that full round wounds so they keep the Fender spank but with more warmth.

In my opinion Fender makes the worst Flatwound out there. Grab some Rotosound Falts, Thomastiks, or at the very least Chromes.

Yeah, ill try that. It just happened that my guitar came with these Fenders Flats so I put them on.

i use D'addario chrome 12's and they are sweet. i plan on switching it up someday, maybe trying the tomastik that everyone's raving about, but for now i like how the chromes sound.

I put some Daddario chrome 11's on my jaguar and im liking them. Since these are the only flats my Guitar Center sells (11 and 12) Ill probably stick with them (and they are only 8 bucks).

I noticed the G string is wound which for whatever reason makes me have to bend more to go up a whole step (or at least it seems like I have to bend more, kind of weird) Will my avri jag nut take the 12's without being filed out?

Chromes are not flatwounds, right? Or I'm wrong?
Which are the differences with the Fender flats?

I use Fender flatwounds (12s) but I haven't tried other flats.
Before I was using the common strings (how are they called? Embarassed ) and I'll never do it again! Laughing
Surf needs flats! My first flats were 11s then I changed them with 12s.
I felt in love. I'd like to try 13s but need a new bridge, first.
I allready have a little buzz with 12s....... and I'm sure the buzzing comes from the bridge. Otherwise I must set higher the strings that I don't want it!

Now I'd like to change strings so what do you suggest me? I can find Chromes very easy but in the local guitar stores, I can't find other flats than Fender. Not a problem to order by internet.............

Every word is like an unecessary stain on silence and nothingness.

oops IronMaiden has answered my question before.
The difference is the G string! That's why I didn't buy Chromes..........

Thomastik-Infeld Power Brights, .011-.046 rounds on my strat and tele.
