I just downloaded a MP3 of Johnny "Guitar" Watson's 1952 instro tune, "Space
Guitar."
While it is a straight-up blues tune, he used heavy reverb that gives the tone a
familiar
surf sound. And he does some really weird effects stuff in a song notable for
its age. Add
to that a sax player and sax solo, and you've got an interesting mix of
proto-surf
ingredients.
Check it out...was this the birth of surf guitar? You be the judge!
