>I found a really old picture of Dick Dale during a Google search.
It backs up his "I used to be a motorcycle tough guy in the 50's"
talk. I posted it in the photos section, the last pic in the group.
Chris
That's cool Chris. I wonder how old he was then? Where did you find it?
I moved it into the Dick Dale folder...sorry I'm anal that way!

I found it while doing a google photo search. I was trying to find
a really good photo of his strat. I thought it was cool, too.
Sorry I didn't put it in the D.D. folder to start with. It looks
like the late 50's. He graduated H.S. in 1954, so probably right
around 21, 22.

On a related topic, has anyone read the Dick Dale biography that
Australian writer Stephen McParland (sp?) wrote?
I think Ferenc was carrying it in the Mart a few years ago.

No - where do I get a copy? I didn't even know there was one.

Here is one place:
He's also got a book with some rare interviews with Richie Podolor that
I've always wanted to read too, but the prices are so high.
5 volumes on Garey Usher????

In that phot, Dick looks younger than he did in his
Rendevous pictures...that photo sort of brings back Dick's
story about "riding motorcyles down to Balboa and playing
guitars in the icecream shop etc" in his pre-Rendevous
period. Maybe that's vefore he moved down to the beach and
started a record store etc. Id' say circa 1957-1958 on the
photo. Just like you said Chris...about 21 or 22 years
old.
Two other clues: the Kodacolor photo is definately
pre-Kodachrome (I think Kodachrome was around
1959/60)...and
Dick's pompadour is very 1956-58 style...lots of grease,
just like "the Wild Ones"...not all "surfed out" like he
had later it in 1959-64.
Did Dick ever join the service? If so, when was he in?

Hey you're talkin to the ex-pompadour king here. I think Dick's
hair looks all poofed up because he was riddin that bike. I don't
think Dick every had anything thick enough in his hair to have a
pompadour. He looks more like a V05 guy.
...he said VO5 ! Now good old DD is a GrecianFormula
man...either that or HotTopic BlackDye #69 !
