RE: [cowabunga] 10 years of slacktone

Johnston, Rick (ricknautica) - 31 Jan 2005 11:33:04

What an amazing event...
I was reintroduced to the Surf genre of music a couple of years ago, by
upgrading a few Trad recordings
To CD and joining these groups. The first modern recording I ever heard
that was not Trad, was Into the Clear Blue Sparkle," by Slacktone and that
set the standard ridiculously high for all of us!!!
The 10th anniversary show at Suzy's was my first all Surf show and it was
absolutely amazing! Dave, Dusty and Sam blew the doors off of the place!
Dave's shredding was every bit as pin point accurate as the studio
recordings, may be faster. Dusty pounded his brand new Ludwig endorsed kit
in to submission with a couple of totally tasty solos. Sam hammered away on
his bass with perfect tone and volume, and seemed to somehow keep the 3
speeding drivers going in the same direction.
The historic significance of seeing so many great guitarists on one stage
with Slacktone will be a lifetime memory, but the point when someone yelled
out to the great Paul Johnson, "Hey Paul, you're pretty good, you should be
in a band," to a room full of warm laughter, will always remind me of how
much this crowd felt like a family to me. Marty from the Planktones and Ted
from the Detonators especially showed incredible kindness and hospitality,
making me feel totally welcome in a crowd of people I had only met in these
online groups.
I was stoaked to hear the Live in Berlin CD, because it reminded me of the
set and feel Slacktone played with Saturday night.
Don't get me wrong, as kind and humble as these guys are, the music was as
wicked as going over the falls on a 20 foot barrel at Mavericks.!
I especially like the fact that they played one last song after someone
said, "We were supposed to close down at 12:30, so keep playing if you want
to pay the fine!" smile
I want to thank Slacktone for a powerful show and all you guys for the class
and humility that really makes this genre shine... Rick!
