AWOID JAGUAR ...OR AT LEAST...

robi biloderic (bitchboysi) - 31 Jan 2005 04:04:01

hello !
first let me share some of my "surf thoughts" and telly you that surf doesn't
come from guitar but from your heart and fingers... so it really doesn't matter
which guitar you choose !!
HOWEVER- yoe need to know charasteristic about some types of guitars so they can
help you find you in this music and and your own style !
i started with jaguar (japanese) and were pleased...but that was because i
transfered from rockabilly washburn guitar and was happy to "have a propper surf
guitar"... but soon i realised it was so damn bright and thin sounded i can't
stand it that anymore... since i have a little hobby of collecting guitars i've
been able to check a lot of them ... and realised each of my guitars sounds
similar to one or more of guitars i noticed in various surf bands...
see- if you like the bambi molesters sound...save some money and buy jazzmaster,
if you prefer slacktone go for jaguar- BUT REPLACE PICKUPS !!! otherwise you'll
gone crazy or at least your ears... if you prefer 60' euro instro (which is
hardly surf !!) go for the cheapest stratocaster copy..at least for the start...
i could go one and one and maybe you have even better knowlidgment about current
surtf artist so i better stop !
BUT HERE'S MY ADWICE:
buy a cheap unknown model that"looks cool" and if it's not what you're looking
just sell it ebay...or at least try changing the pickups with some more "surfy"
to see what happen (i will do such an experiment soon ) and get yourself a cheap
strat copy--- you can miss with it.
BUT:
the secret (probably for nobody here !) is of course in the reverb- it doesn't
matter which amplifier you use as long as you have (fender) reverb tank, but if
you don't have it and think you won't be able to have it for some more time, go
with fender TWIN or SUPER REVERB... i don't think DUAL SHOWMAN is the best
choice (the sound is probably great...but you need 3-4 slaves to help you with
carrying :))
currently i play an unknown model given to me as a gift- nobody so far could
explain me 100% the name or model...so it stays enigma ...BUT: i am satified and
so are the listeners...and it's really nice to hear you have your own style and
sound... please check my "funny guitar " on www.bitchboys.net - soon i will
upload all my "vintage rarities" and maybe some of you out there will be able to
help me identifying !
and the final BUT: i must confes i am still looking for a jazzmaster because
would also like to have that on ein my collection since adore its sound ...and
of course can not afford it at the moment ha ha ...IF ANYBODY KNOWS OF ANY
REALLY CHEAP, PLEASE LET ME KNOW...YOURS ROBI

I would love to get a Jaguar but it's a bit out of my price range.
I've looked around on eBay for a Japanese one but those are still a
bit pricey. Also, I was just planning on getting a standard Strat.
Is that not a good idea?

that's awesome, very good pics.
I have the EXACT same guitar - mailed about it with robi before - but
it's been lying around in parts for a while, i have to fix it up
before.
my observations were: crappy basebalbat neck, crappy trem with crappy
bridge, crappy sound. but its been years since i played it. If i get
around to it i'll post some pics
Teiso got a model with the same shape but different pup layout...
anyone knows who'd been copying who?

With all due respect this has to be one of the more pointless post
I've seen on surfguitar101. You say for surf it really doesn't
matter which gutar you choose. First, I disagree if you are going
for a trad. sound I would say it's very important what guitar you
choose. But, if your going for a more modern sound go ahead play
whatever you want. Secoundly, after you say any guitar is ok as
long as it comes from you heart, you go after the Jaguar. So really
you're contradicting yourself. Replace the pickups on the Jaguar?
Are you nuts? Those are the best pickups Fender designed IMO.
As for your amp recommendation. You say go for a Super Reverb
before a Dual Showman?? Huh? I have a '65 Super Reverb, it's the
holy grail of pre-cbs Fender amps, but it's lousy for surf because
it breaks up too easily. It's also more costly than my bassist's
Dual Showman or my Bandmaster. I think it's easier to carry around
a Bandmaster or Showman just because they come in two parts.
Lugging my Super or a Twin reverb around was murder!
