Re: [Slacktone] 10 years of slacktone

Ferenc Dobronyi (ferencnd) - 30 Jan 2005 18:54:46

A "Love Fest" comes to mind as the first description
of what happened last night in Hermosa. Slacktone
could do no wrong, (and they didn't,) and were feeding
of the energy of the crowd. You could see their faces
shine when they recognized someone in the audience,
and then play the next phrase a little bit harder in
dedication. The first set was unbelievably powerful.
Dave's face turning bright red in the first song, Sam,
the essence of keeping a cool head in storm, anchoring
the band so they don't fly out of orbit. Dusty,
hamming it up with extra finesse and dynamic, taking a
brilliant solo turn in "Tiki Bar Crawl".
Between songs, Dave told stories about some of the
audience members and how they had influenced the band,
whether musically or just by inspiration. Lots of
words about the early days, and memories of Mike
Sullivan. Dusty told about how, after having not seen
Dave for 10 years, Dave suggested that they form a
surf band. Dusty was expecting to play "Pipeline", but
Dave came to practice with "Chaos", 'Skateboard
commando" and "PCH", and Dusty's jaw dropped ib awe
(the original name of the band was Slackjaw, right?).
Big Tiki Jeff told about working at the Surf Museum
and seeing the name for the band on the list of bands
to play in the parking lot, and figured they were some
Hawaiian slack guitar band, and how pleasantly blown
away when he saw them first perform.
The second set featured friends of the band sitting
in, and performing either Slacktone songs or their own
band's material. Dave Arnson added arrpegiated
atmospherics to "Rell Sun Aloha", Bernard Yin stomped
through Led Zep's "Immigrant Song". I fulfilled a
personal dream by playing "Surf Party". Rich and Katie
from the Balboas did a bit of psyche-surf. And the
highlight for me- Paul Johnson, the man who started it
all, playing "Mr. Moto" and "Squad Car" before taking
the rhythm guitar spot behind Dave for "Glide", and
for the first time ever on stage, "Gung Ho for Don
Ho". I forgot to mention that Slacktone played 3 new
original tunes in the first set, a taste of a new
album I hope. And, as for new albums, a special CD was
available at last night's show, a live set from
Berlin's Wild at Heart club, recorded on last year's
Euro tour.
The star studded crowd- Big Tiki, Clint Beachwood
(acting as MC), all of The Detonators, Marty Tippens,
Gregory Fleeman, in the tapers corner- Matt Kora,
Steve Liblis, and Mike, MuSick Art, the HBISM crew,
gadzooks too many too mention... (though I still
didn't meet Kristina Hernandez...)
By the time I got there all the tables were taken,
so we were hovering over a group about to leave, and
the guy stands up, then says to me, "who's the band
tonight, are they any good?" I told him to stick
around and see the band, they're pretty good. I want
you to know that that guy was still there when I left,
and will probably be at Slacktone's 20th!
See you there,
Ferenc

That's a good rundown, Ferenc,
I want to add that Dave said some very nice words about John Blair, mentioning
that before he met John, he was playing things like "Feels Like the First Time".
Slacktone did John's "Rumble at Waikiki" beautifully.

Kristena Hernandez (freakytiki2001) - 31 Jan 2005 00:06:41

I really loved seeing Paul Johnson play. That was a treat that I wasn't
expecting. I knew Ferenc and Dave were guests, but I guess I overlooked
the rest of the guest list. You guys need to put together more shows
like that!
Over 4 hours of surf, and no one even looked tired by the end of the
night.
-Kristena
PS: O think I actually heard Dusty call it a "love fest" last night.
