Fender Mustangs?

storm_static_sleep - 30 Jan 2005 02:29:37

Can you guys tell me anything about this guitar? Specifically if I
should get this over a Strat and if it's any good for playing surf.
Also, is the tremelo on it any good? Thanks.

I've often thought about a Mustang. Do you like the Strat "25.5
scale? I really prefer the Jaguar's shorter "24 scale to the "25.5,
which is one of the reasons why I've thought about getting a
Mustang. I've seen the Infrareds and Satan's Pilgrims with them, so
they are/have been used. If your decision is between a Strat and a
Mustang, what about a Jaguar? IMO the Jaguar is the better guitar.
Also what Strat are you thinking about? So many Strats "out of the
box" today aren't what most would consider "ideal" surf instruments.

I would love to get a Jaguar but it's a bit out of my price range.
I've looked around on eBay for a Japanese one but those are still a
bit pricey. Also, I was just planning on getting a standard Strat.
Is that not a good idea?

Well I'm not a Strat expert, but I've owned a few. I have right now
an American Standard and I'm not a fan of the 9.5 radius, modern
tuners, over-sized frets, and mostly the 2 point bridge. I think
the older bridges found on the vintage reissues sound more like the
older Strats heard on all the classic surf recordings. Also the
wiring is different.
That being said, it(standard strat) would make for a better
traditional surf guitar than some of the Strats Fender is making now
with Humbuckers and Texas Special pickups. Just remember so many of
those updated Strats were updated so they wouldn't sound like the
originals.
I bet you could find a CIJ Jaguar or Jazzmaster for around $500.00.
Can a Mustang be found for that? Also, that's probably not much more
than the going rate of standard Strat.
Maybe someone who's really into Strats could help you out more.

storm:
I'd say stay away from the Mustang. Originally, the
Mustang was Fender's low-end student model electric
guitar. Although Kurt Kobain really liked his Mustang, I
have to tell you that every Mustang I've ever played at a
pawnshop or music store has been quite disappointing. For
the money, there are way better choices out there.
good luck,

I paid $179 for my Mustang. Oh, wait, that was in 1965 :-)
The Jag was better and more expensive. I had trouble with the slide
switches, nothing that some contact cleaner spray couldn't fix, but I
didn't know about such things back then. When ever I mess with it
today, which is seldom, it's frustrating because the trem never
returns to an in tune condition.
