Is a Hipshot Fulcrum temolo OK for surf, or is that a no-no?
Wow, that looks interesting. I use a Hipshot B-Bender and D-Tuner to countrify
some surf tunes but I haven't seen this full on vibrato unit.

I think any trem system will work for surf, they are all a bit
different, but geez we don't need to start splitting hairs here.
This trem looks like the modern strat design: same saddles and 2 point
pivot system.
BTW, did you see anyone we all know on the Reverend "Believers" page? :)

When I first saw the Hipshot vibrato, I was under the impression that it was
strictly surface mount, like the rest of the Hipshot stuff. I now see that it is
no more than the modern Strat trem, which is a fine trem if ya ask me.
As for the Reverend page, there's a lotta names there. Who are we lookin' fer? I
can't imagine you were referin' to Kid Rock.

It is a funny name that is pronounced differently than it is spelled.
Starts with an F. Has surf connections....

Am I right or what?
Do NOT go with anything that looks like the modern Strat trem. It's a
complete piece of junk. The Hipshot looks like nothing more than a
bad copy of the Wilkinson trem That stock modern Fender 2-fulcrum
point trem is a total piece of crap, especially the laughable
"screw-in" bar. The only forgivable part of its design is that it's
closer to a Floyd Rose, with the 2 low-friction fulcrum points, which
is its only good point.
If you truly want to swap out a trem for something that will a) work
dependably b) sound great, and c) stay in tune, get a real Wilkinson
drop-in replacement, the MM1171, from Mighty Mite. Go to
to see it. I replaced my modern Fender strat unit, and I don't regret
it for second.
The Wilky is a direct, drop-in replacement for the awful stock modern
two-point fulcrum Fender trem. Once installed and *properly* set up,
the trem action is very fluid, smooth, and it even improves the
sustain without altering the tone. The Wilkinson is a completely
re-engineered piece of equipment, not a copy of a poor design.
Another thing I really like about it is the sleek, rounded corners.
It just *feels* organic to the guitar, not like some jagged piece of
metal sticking on the face of the instrument. There is even a screw
to adjust the amount of play in the bar so that it fits snugly and
doesn't swing aorund.
Does it sound like I love the Wilky? Yep. I think you will too...
Wilkys can be found relatively cheap at StewMac and at Mighty Mite.

We'll alright RT, but I've been using the Fender Strat Trem since the mid '70's
and have never had any issues with it that weren't resolved quickly by a spot of
lube to the nut. (oh man, can that last phrase be taken the wrong way!)

And I saw you too Marty, though it was just too damn
loud to have a decent conversation... rotten loud rock
bands! (my thoughts on the Slacktone show to follow).
Back to the issue- I love the trem on my Reverend. It
is, as noted by all, basically a 2 pole strat trem. It
stays in tune, as Ivan said, for weeks. I hit it hard,
not in a dive bomb way, but with in a hula girl wiggle
kind of thing, never more than a half step. I used to
have it set up so that it floats (the trem is not
tight against the body, but sits with equal tension
between the springs and the strings. the big advantage
of this is that you can get a subtle vibrato where the
pitch rises as well as falls.) However, I got tired of
making adjustments to the springs every time I changed
strings- even the same brand would exert a slightly
different amount of tension. Mjor pain in the arse...
So now I have it set up so the bridge sits snugly, but
not too much, against the body of the guitar. The big
advantage here is that you get better bridge to body
vibration transfer, which equals better tone and
sustain. Some people will tell you that you have to
tighten the springs so much that the bridge is very
tight against the body, in my expereince, this causes
major tuning issues, and makes subtle, surf style
vibrato impossible.

You Reverend complete with 2 point vibrato sounded great last night, Ferenc! I
have those trems set against the body as well and not all that snugly. I use
four springs but I let the spring carrage screws out purdy far so that the wammy
is movable.

Which reminds me, I'm sorry I didn't say hi. The band just kept going
and there was such a crowd. Hopefully I'll show up earlier to the next
show so I actually have time to talk.
yeah Kristena,
I saw you from afar and I figured I run into you before the night was done. It
was a big crowd.
