Blue Stingrays was Re: Surf band and album reccomendations.

Brian Neal (xarxas) - 27 Jan 2005 22:05:42

You know, I have heard so many good things about the mysterious Blue
Stingrays from so many places. I finally got it, and was really
disappointed. I think I listened to it once. I thought it was really
dull and it left no impression on me. Obviously, your mileage will vary...

I figured I paid 12 bucks for a real funny and well dsigned booklet,
which came with a free sample cd of instrumental elevator music.

Ah, but didn't we also get a guitar pick (just like the pros use) in that Blue
Stingrays package? Talk about value! You're right about the booklet being well
designed. I thought it was a clever touch when they listed the B.S. (double
meaning) catalog of albums with songs being repeated across albums just as ol'
Del Fi used t'do.

I'm glad you said it, or I would have :-) I think that cd has all of
the life of most of the later Challengers material (actually, probably
not as much)

Hmm... I kinda liked it. Though it's pretty dark, and you can
definitely tell that it's the Heartbreakers. If your taste leans
towards the more aggressive and reverb-drenched, you might not care
for it. The guitar sounds are pretty dry. There are some very
beautiful moments, "Blue Venus" is a tasty little piece. The cover
of "Goldfinger" is one of the best I've ever heard. "Malibu Babylon"
is pretty much a straight-ahead Tom Petty rave-up without any Tom
Petty vocals, ha.

Reminds me of a D.D. show I saw a few years ago. I go every year,
sometimes twice a year to see D.D. If you've ever been to a show,
you know even if you are standing right up front, the only people
who get a pick are the girls. for 9 years straight, I never got a
pick. So one year, I said, " I'm gonna get a pick, no matter what
it takes" I got right up front, and there was a girl next to me
that was pretty sleazy, and not in a good way. "I said, if you
get a pick, can I have it?, (because she said she had seen him
twice and got a pick both times) well, she got a pick, and in
order for me to get the pick, I had to kiss her. Guys, I KISSED A
FAT GIRL! I KISSED A FAT SLEAZY GIRL FOR A DICK DALE GUITAR PICK!
(she also got a set of sticks from Dusty, and a pick from Captain
Ron)
I have that pick displayed proudly on the wall with other D.D.
memorabilia a my work.

Uh . . . wow . . . you earned that one, Chris!
I won't speculate as to the "asking price" for one of Captain Ron's picks .

Mr, you're a better man than I. I may consider that for one of
Wronski's, or maybe Ivan's, but not DD :-) Only thing I ever got at a
show was one of Jeff Healey's drummer's sig sticks. The people I was
with thought that there was some sort of psychic connection between
the two of us and he somehow knew that I was a drummer.
