I would respectfully like to disagree with Marty. In my opinion,
Cowabunga group has been crap for a long, long time. I first joined
the group in late '94 or thereabouts, and it was wonderful for many
years. But since about 2000, it changed. Between political rants
and constant flame wars between the prog-heads and trad-nazis and the
same few people making the same dull posts, it's become really,
really tired, and information content is almost zero. As far as I'm
concerned, SG101 has really emerged as THEE group for tolerant,
civilized true lovers of surf music, whether musicians or not. Not
that there are not some very good people on Cowabunga still, but I
honestly don't understand why they stick around there. I wish we
could get them over here permanently (John Blair in particular comes
to mind). Maybe the perception is that this list is just for gear-
talk, which is obviously not the case. I think SG101 has become at
least partly what Rip Thrillby of the Penetrators wanted Reverborama
to be. But anyway, for somebody new to surf music it seems like
Cowabunga would be a big turn-off. I'd advise staying away.
My two cents (without anybody asking - sorry)...

Also, go to the shows and buy from the bands there. Also, subscribe
to the Cowabunga yahoo group if you haven't already.

Grand Rapids, Michigan? Is that where you live? That's not very far
from where I live...
Or Iowa? (I think there's one there - or is it Illinois? I can't
remember now...)

online is EZ...but digging through the vintage LPs can be
fun too. I almost never find a surf CD in a real
store...mostly online...but 99 cent CDs on ebay are way
worth it!

It seems like the Shadowy Men from a Shadowy Planet would
fit in nicely on your list...not exactly "pure" surf...but,
totally awesome instrumental music. A little
"shadows-esque" I'd say.

Oh, P-sha...Thanks for the compliment!
The problem with our albums, is by the time we learned how to make them
sound good (the 3rd album), we used up most of our "true" surf songs. So
even though the 3rd one is the best, IMHO, there are some good trad
constructed songs on the first two albums, but the recording sucks (to my
ears), and for the die-hard surf fan, the vocal tracks (hardcore punk)
detract from the listening experience.
Thanks,
Ran

I can't believe I forgot the Blue Stingrays. Does anyone know for fact
that the guitarist is Mike Campbell lead guitarist for Tom Petty and
the Hearthbreaks and producer of several Los Straitjackets tunes.

...well, we hear it all the time on at SG101: Trad isn't
everything...I simply dig the cool creativity I find among
this crowd. I've heard it expressed here before about how
the "limitations" of surf instrumental genre really inspire
many new creative conurbations...I agree with the
sentiment. No matter how you approach it, "Trad",
"Psycho", "Experimental", "Techno"...whatever...when the
reverb's pumping out the rhythtm and melodic bliss and the
double-back-beat snare is driving...and the cymbals and
toms are rolling and crashing like the crazy boogie-board
waves down at the Wedge in Newport...
man, that's surf to me

Subject: [SurfGuitar101] Surf band and album reccomendations.
I'm trying to get into more surf music but I find it hard to come
across bands I like. As of late, I have been listening to Dick Dale,
The Ventures, The Phantom Surfers, and Laika and the Cosmonauts. Any
reccomendations are welcomed. Thanks.

...well...I don't know for a fact (because it's TOP
SECRET), but I have heard and read in many many many places
that ...yes, in fact, all the members of the Blue Stingrays
are also the members of Tom Petty's band...guitar, bass,
drums.
...as far as the Los Straightjackets rumour...well, I am
not at liberty at this time to either confirm nor deny that
alleged information.

He is credited for procucing some of the Straitjackets stuff. Not a
whole lot, but several tracks nonetheless.

Yes DP,
"Legends of Surf Guitar" is a must have among comps. I also give "Surf Legends
and Rumors" holy grail status although more for the obscurity and great sound
quality. Most of the tracks are not essential surf tracks for a newcomer.

I totally agree...The Blue Hawaiians "Live at the Lava
Lounge" and "Christmas on Big Island" ...totally surf!
and Slacktone's "Warning: Reverb Instrumentals"
and the Blue Stingrays: "Surf-N-Burn"
and of course the Rhino Records: "Cowabunga!:the Surf Box"
and the Holy Grail of All Compilations: "Guitar Player
presents Legends of Guitar: Surf"

Yeah, I do like the Shadowy Men, DP. I don't listen to them as regularly as
those listed below.

Marty:
It seems like the Shadowy Men from a Shadowy Planet would
fit in nicely on your list...not exactly "pure" surf...but,
totally awesome instrumental music. A little
"shadows-esque" I'd say.

Your criticisms of Cowabunga are well founded, Ivan. Those same characters who
were messin' up the Reverborama list last month are now at it on Cowabunga!
Never-the-less, some good discussion still gets through and as you say, not
everyone has moved hear (yet). I do hope this list is able to maintain it's
civility. Don't nobody tell you-know-who about it!!!

Ivan

Also, go to the shows and buy from the bands there. Also, subscribe

Well, I haven't seen too many people besides Ivan bring them up in
this ongoing dialogue, but the Surf Coasters are definitely worth
checking out ... it'll just be expensive.
"Surf Attack," "Surfside Village" and "Surfdelic" are absolute must-
owns, and "L'Espirit" is up there as well.
Or, at the very least, just flip a coin between their two best-
ofs, "Fly Up" and "Misirlou." The second one's newer, but it repeats
a few songs from the first one.
Dave Myers and the Surftones' "Hangin' Twenty" is a great album, or
just get his best-of, which has that album in its entirety plus a
single.
The Rare Surf Vol. 3 split with Johnny Fortune and Johnny Barakat &
the Vestells is also a great purchase.
Someone else mentioned the "Surf Legends and Rumors" comp--that one's
well worth hunting down, and so is "Toes on the Nose." In each case
not every track is amazing, but there's like 30 on each--the great
definitely outweighs the bad. (Almost a dozen Eddie & the Showmen
tunes and the original version of "Cecilia Ann" are reason enough to
order both.)
