Surf band and album reccomendations.

storm_static_sleep - 27 Jan 2005 09:26:19

I'm trying to get into more surf music but I find it hard to come
across bands I like. As of late, I have been listening to Dick Dale,
The Ventures, The Phantom Surfers, and Laika and the Cosmonauts. Any
reccomendations are welcomed. Thanks.

Cosmonauti-Bikini Angel: it is a great Italian surf album
The Bambi Molesters-Dumb Loud Hollow Twang Deluxe: Hawaii Joe is worth
the price of admission
The Nebulas-Nebula One: Almost as good as It's Go Time!
Toes on the Nose: Compilation of a bunch of great '60s surf guitarists
Los Mel-Tones-Surf Sensation: Over 30 tracks and 77 minutes long

So do you guys get these albums from a record store or do you order
them online or something? Cause whenever I go to Amoeba, which is
supposed to be the holy grail of record stores in the Bay Area, I
hardly ever see any surf albums. I think I might have to give into
buying stuff online and fork out the S&H.

www.zptduda.com
Dave has a fantastic selection of surf CDs. I agree,
Amoeba is overwelming, usually I go there and then
forget what it was I was looking for...

PS- some great shows coming up in San Francisco-

Dave Becker (novapup2001) - 27 Jan 2005 14:55:59

Streetlight Records on Bascom Ave in San Jose usually keeps a moderate
stock of not-so-recently published Surf music. Rasputin further down the
block also has a small selection. Big Al's Record Barn up the street
from Streetlight has great obscure "first wave" Surf vinyl for a pretty
penny.
Online, I would take Ferenc's advise and start with Dave at
for current and new releases by mail. He's very reliable.
Enjoy!

Ivan,
Shame you leave out one of the most influential bands of the 90's...
The Space Cossacks: "Interstellar Stomp", "Tsar Wars" (mid-nineties into the
millenium, DC)
Looking back, Interstellar Stomp was the album that ushered me out of
the "surf of commercial distribution" and into the "surf of talent and
songwriting prowess". Incidentally this was back in '97 and I oversaw
someone RAVING about The Space Cossacks in an AOL chatroom titles "Surf
Music".

On line is the ticket these days. Do Ebay, and Google searches. Also, go to the
shows and buy from the bands there. Also, subscribe to the Cowabunga yahoo group

As a fan of the Ventures and Laika and DD, some others that I consider the cream
of the crop include:
Jon and the Nightriders
Slacktone
Spies Who Surf
Ultras
Fathoms
Shadows
Lively Ones
Challengers

A few more...it's getting harder not to repeat someone else:
Recent Bands:
The Bomboras - Head Shrinkin' Fun is the pinnacle of their work IMHO
Husky & The Sandmen
The Hellbenders - not really surf, but dig that spaghetti western twang
Los Straitjackets - get their live "Damas y Cabelleros" - a great
introduction
Pollo Del Mar - The Golden State, a great modern sounding surf album
From the 80's and beyond:
The Halibuts
From the 60's:
The (Original) Surfaris - i.e. not the Wipeout guys
The Atlantics - forefathers of The Space Cossacks
I also strongly second the previous recommendations on The Nebulas, The
Space Cossacks, The Penetrators, The Apemen, The Volcanos, Jon & The
Nightriders, Slacktone, The Lively Ones, The Bambi Molesters, and S A T
A N ' S P I L G R I M S.
Oh yeah, The Beat Tornados "Mission To Mir" is a stunning piece of
Scando-Euro-Surf. Wow.
And The Treble Spankers do (did) amazing middle eastern sounding surf.
The Treblemakers are great too.
And yes, as you noted, you pretty much have to do all your shopping
online in this genre! Zptduda and Double Crown are great places to get
started.
