Re: [SurfGuitar101] What if we built our own Ultimate Fender Surf Guitar? (Pickups)

DP (noetical1) - 18 Jan 2005 14:17:22

I'd like to submit some more ideas regarding The Ultimate
Surf Gutar by Fender for discussion:
Pickups-
I know the type and arrangement of pickups will definately
be a controversial topic. What types and arangement would
work for this project? First off, i think that the overall
sound should be considered. For me, the ideal guitar would
have sound characteristics found in several guitars that
are considered "surfy".
Jazzmaster: I love the full-bodied tone produced by
Jazzmaster style pickups. The presence and full-spectrum
tone of these pickups sounds best for surf leads to my
ears.
Jaguar: awesomely surfy, especially when functioning in
ryhthm mode. Chunka Chunka Chunk and sparkle shimmer.
Mosrite: the "hot" bite of overwound Mosrite pickups is
super surfy to my ears. Another great lead tone that stands
out in any mix.
G&L: the sound quality of G&L pickups is very strong,
something like an overwound Fender single coil pickup, but
better.
Telecaster: I like the classic twang and jangle of the neck
pickup. I just wish it had a bit more "heft" to it. Maybe
more like a G&L pickup.
Danelectro/Armstrong: like the Tele pickup, the lipstick
tube has it's own unique surf appeal. Also a little more
volume out of these wouldn't be bad.
Strat: I guess if you want Strat sounding pickups, then you
might as well buy The Dick Dale Custom shop guitar and
forget about this project altogether. In my humble opinion,
the Strat tone is set in stone, if you are looking for
that, then simply buy a Strat. In my book, even though
Dick Dale and Paul Johnson and many others would declare
the Strat tone to be "The Ultimate", I still crave
something a little more subtle and refined and versatile
and cool.
So what kind of pickups should The Ultimate Surf Guitar
have? I think that an over-wound Jazzmaster-type pickup in
the bridge position would provide the full-bodied tone,
while additionally offering an almost Mosrite-ish quality
to boot. A Jaguar style pickup in the middle position
should offer additional tone choices, color and depth. In
the neck position, I'd like to see an enhanced Telecaster
or Lipstick type pickup.
Switching could be of the Jaguar or better yet BassVI
variety: namely slider selectors for on/off for each
pickup. I'd leave off the special Jaguar "jagtone" selector
circuit option though...you know, the ultra-thin piercing
jangle setting from a specially designed switch circuit.
An in-phase, out-of phase circuit between pickups might be
interesting...then again it might just be confusing. A
single switch which throws whatever pickups are selected in
and out of phase might not be too bad.
Any responses?

A little off topic, but Kent armstrong makes a "Hot"
version of their Lipstick tube PUs. I have them in my
Strat, they sound great.

Guys, I think we are missing the point: can we all get behind sending Fender
letters in
support of a surf guitar model? DP is drafting just such a letter. I figure I
will need 100 or
so individual letters to get Fender's attention. Once I get a big ol' pile, we
can work out the
details.
Please, give DPs letter some consideration, or draft your own. You can send 'em
to me at:
Gavin, PO Box 9, Colorado Springs, CO 80907.
I think letters would be more helpful than e-mails, but if you fee
mail-challenged or can't
afford stamps and envelopes, you may also write me. I will print and save all
letters.
Gavin
P.S. I think Kent Armstrong lipstick pickups are great! But, would Fender? Does
Seymour
Duncan also make lipsticks? I seem to recall that he does.

Then it should be a very short letter, and leave the
details up to Fender, I don't think you will ever get
a concensus from this list as to what the perfect surf
guitar would be, the only thing everybody can agree on
is reverb...

I think I'm with you Ferenc. 100 of us would have 100 different opinions on the
perfect surf guitar. Fender has already issued three basic Surf Guitars, the
Jag, JM and Strat, with which we choose and make modifications to our liking. Am
I saying that you guys shouldn't go forward with your request? No. Knock
yourselves out but I don't think the marketing dept at Fender will find it
worthwhile outside of a custom shop heavily priced type thing.

Ferenc, yeah I remember those guitars well. In fact, they were the impetus for
my idea. If
there were a stack of letters expressing interest in a production model of a
Fender surf
guitars, maybe Fender would see its way to making some (even if only a special
run of a
couple hundred). I am less concerned with what goes into them than that they
would
actually be made. We can assume people would modify them to suit their tastes.
So, I agree, the details would best be left to someone at Fender...although they
might
entertain suggestions.
I think, naysayers aside, it's worth everyone contributing a short letter
expressing an
interest in a reasonably-priced surf guitar based on Fender's already famed surf
trio. All
anyone has to lose is the stamp.

Dave,
I should have known that you had designed that guitar,
it really defines "surf" style. I'd buy one if it was
a production model...
Europe was awesome, we Pollos had a blast... see you
in a couple weeks at the Slacktone 10th anniversary
show.
thanks,

I really dig that strat-like body/neck coupled with the Jag
accoutrements...very tasteful. Did you notice the

Look now at the Slacktone photo file to see my
unfinished Slackocaster, I just uploaded it. Dennis
has a new version for NAMM. It's solid laminate
instead of just the top. It has a non laminate
pickguard, it's solid pearl, three Strat pickups, and
a Strat bridge.
If you want a surf guitar custom made, I can reccomend
Dennis, and Chris Flemming, two Master Builders that
do great work. Chris has made some Jags with big
blocks and binding that are just fantastic.
That's real cool Europe went well for you, lot's of
nice people there!

That blue sparkle is nice, Dave, and I'm definitely into the two pickup idea.
I have never once used that center pick-up in my 30 years of playing Strats. Now
what is a "big block" Jag? (and don't nobody answer with something about fitting
the guitar with a 4 barrel Hemi, it's too easy a joke!)

Guitar? (Pickups)

Position markers. Like a 1967 Jaguar, only with a
nicer neck shape.

Ah very good, Dave.
I notice you've slapped the Jazzmaster/Jaguar type bridge in that baby. They've
always been troublesome bridges. You and Don Wilson are the only guys who stick
by 'em. Are you into that bridge for vibrato operation, reduced sustain or...?
