The Blue Hawaiians as therapy...

DP (noetical1) - 18 Jan 2005 03:17:55

...well, I spent most of the holidays going through a
breakup of a three-year relationship...total
bummer...things tend to get complicated when you're old and
she's older and you have a teenage daughter..and she has
dogs...and you both have houses in different cities...and
she don't wanna move and you simply can't move...and
blah, blah blah, blah blah...so we decided to end it...
anyway, what does all this have to do with SurfGuitar101?
...well, over the last two weeks, I have been listening to
a non-stop diet of The Blue Hawaiians.
If you haven't heard of them, I highly recommend them. Not
100% instrumental surf...but tons on cool reverb and enough
instrumentals to keep you interested...and their
croony-longe singing and their depressing lyrics about
deception, betrayal and lost love are bound to liven up any
party.
a brief review of their CDs? okay:
"Christmas on Big Island": Santa Claus Kahunatiki Awanalaya
Hawaiian style, great way to spend the holidays
"Sway" great crooning and tight production. Chris Isaak
wishes he was as good as the Blue Hawaiians are on this
gem.
"Savage Night" brutally true tales about brutally true
betrayal...and a ripping rendition of Johnny Kidd's
"Shakin' all Over" (way better than the Who Live at Leeds
version, by far, and I didn't think anyone could ever do
that)
"Live at the Lava Lounge" almost as good as really being at
a Blue Hawaiians show at the Lava Lounge in Hollywood. Lots
of cool "trad surf" tunes such as: 'Pipeline',
'Apache','Caravan', 'Jack the Ripper','Latinia', 'Baja',
'Surfin Tragedy', 'Soul Surfer' and 'The Jester'...if they
ever ever play the Lava Lounge again, by all means drop
whatever you are doing and make the trek to see 'em...I
did, and I'm glad I did.
Of course, you can still always hear the Blue Hawaiian's
music on SpongeBob SquarePants when you're eating your
Cheerios on Saturday morning.
The Blue Hawaiians are making my life a little better right
now...and sometimes, a little better is enough.
thanks for listening, your pal,
DP
