Sound of Twin Reverb vs. Showman

bigtikidude - 20 Jun 2002 22:13:45

I think it was brian asking this.
I don't play guitar(that well anyway), But I believe I can say by
seeing probably close to 100 surf bands that a twin kicks ass and
is a great amp, But does not have the Low end umph of a show man.
The 2x12 open back vs. a 2x15 of a seald enclosure makes all the
difference. In home speakers the better ones are usually seald with
no port or hole. The note/notes are more pure, where as a open cabnite
might be a little louder, You loose all the control of the sound
waves. They come bouncing out of the Back and cause weird side
effects. But saying that, If i ever got a Fender amp to fiddle around
with, I'd probably get something like a twin. Unless I came across
a deal like my friend did, where he got a showman head and 2x15 cab
for like $200. What a steal, all he had to do was re-cover the thing
with tolex and new front grill cloth.
Hope that kinda helps,
Jeff(bigtikidude) Dual Showman for Bass for sure!!

That was some interesting discussion there, but Jeff nailed my question
exactly. I was just asking if the only major difference in tone is because
of the speaker cabinets being open or closed back. I would probably get a
Twin Reverb too, they are more readily available. It would take some time
hunting on E-bay or something to get a Showman. Still I am dreaming a bit,
what would a dope like me do with that much of an amp! My wife thinks I play
too loud as it is.
Anyone else care to describe the experience of playing through a cranked
Dual/Single Showman? Dano? Ivan? Do you feel the air move past with 2 15"
speakers??!!!
Thanks,
BN

-Brian,
For the Band that I was in for 2 gigs,I played my Bass thru my
guitar players showman. His Reverb had taken a dump, and My bass amp
is probably a guitar amp because it has reverb built in. Huge tank
about Foot 1/2 long. So I was a little worried about playing bass
thru a guitar showman. But it held up pretty well. And Man the first
time I really thumped the Low E. Boom!! a huge wall of air moved the
hair on my legs. It freaked me out, because this had never happened
standing infront of my piece of shit amp. It's loud, but no low end
umph at all. If you can find one and have the money, get the Showman
or Dual.

Yeah, but at 100 watts, is that enough for the bass to keep up?

-Phil,
Yeah it was plenty loud and way boomy when I watched the video
latter.we played a backyard party and the drums were anatural(no PA)
And the Mix was pretty good.
Definetly want a dual Showman or something comparable in wattage
when I break down and get a real amp soon.
It was cool to meet and see your band. Really like the 2nd cd alot.
Talk to ya latter,

I guess I'll have to be on the lookout for a (dual) Showman now...
Jeff,
Thanks for coming out and the pleasure was all mine. Keep the show reviews
coming. It's one of the only ways I (who is stuck in the Midwest) can get a
groove on what's going on.
Thanks again.
