Damn,
This is really shaping up to be a killer summer of surf shows.
This weekend I saw 5 out of a possible 10 gigs at differnt locations
around so.cal. As stated before,get yo ass out to a live show
Fri. Night
First a Kickass jam of spectacular propotions by Detenators/Chum/
and The Insect Surfers at Suzys in Hermosa Beach. All 3 bands put
in a lot of energy and extra effort for a really fun show.
Highlights: Detenators For a Few Waves More/ Chum: Green Onions,and
a killer cover of the Ramones Rockaway Beach(Vocal by drummer Adrien)
dedicated to Dee Dee Ramone.And Insects Rocked in there Usuall form
had a Friend sittin' in on Lap steel for Vocano Juice and Polaris.
Sat. afternoon, Matt from the Reventlos has this kinda Karaokee
surf thing that he does by himself, where he has a Back up recording
of real instruments doin' surf tunes, that he plays live guitar to.
Anyhow, He had another guy (Skip,from Mystic Knights of the Sea)
and My Pal Jim Frias of Nocturnes fame, sittin in with him. For a
opening of a old folks hospital. highlihts: anything Jim doesn't
know, he figures out real quick, and pulls off excellent, or he
reaches for the shaker and just kinda sits it out.But Wild Weekend,
Sleepwalk, and Endless Summer came off really well.
Sat. Night. (decision city)had to decide between last minute Sting-
rays,Invite for free Dick Dale show,New Band The Aquanaughts, or
old Favs Insects Surfers with Musical chairs, i.e sit ins. Adrien
from Chum on Drums,Dan Valente on Guitar instead of bass,Mark
Heshler ex member sittin in on bass,and Mermen drummer Martin sittin
in on Polaris.I heard it went well and was way cool.
But I had promissed I would Check out New Band The Aquanaughts.
I'm glad I did.An exremely intense and LOUD Traditoinal band(lots of
promise here).Tons of cool,semi obscure covers,good originals that
sound 60's style and lots and lots of Energy.Highlights: The Victor
(DickDale),The Pintor-(The Pharos),Devils'Martini(The Dynotones),See
these guys at The Hub Coffey shop in Fullerton on Sun. July 28th.
And Hopefully at the Surfing Museum sometime in the fall.
Sun.afternoon The Fathers day surfing contest in Encinitas. First
up Surftones new band(1/3 vocal 2/3 instro) 3/4 crap nothing to note
on them.Deoras,great as always,cracks me up to see Mike with Agent
Orange 1 weekend and see him with a Hawaiian shirt playin surf Music
the next weekend. Highlight: Fadeaway,and Wild Kingdom. Next Band
Hurricanes fair to good, Mix of early classic rock and surf
tunes,songs of note Heartful of Soul,Mission Impossible theme. Next
band The Surf Kings minus one rhythm guitar player(what happend)?
Excellent set as always I really like them. Highlights Fiberglass
Jungle,and Misserlou.
Sun. Evening Took the Mom and Pops to the Reventlos/Nancy Sinatra/
Dick Dale show for Late Mothers Day/Fathers Day present. Reventlos
put on a spectacular 1/2 hour set,Wish they got an hour or more.
Highlights: Stan Orlow,and Crankheads of Elsinore. These guys should
be HUGE!! Fantastic Musicianship(so much more than surf).
Nacy Sinatra, Voice is just fair, she can carry a tune, but she's
no Frank, but her face is starting to look alot like her dads(ouch!!)
Her Band has Gilby Clark (ex of Guns N'Roses) and (Sorry forgot his
name) (drummer from Blondie,and DramaRama)both very good players,
and 2 axe slinger dudes(GIT grads) on bass and guitar.Lots of other
peoples songs and a couple of her own. Highlights:You Only Live Twice
and Of course These Boots Are Made For Walking.
The Man Dick Dale, Never seases to blow my mind, how LOUD and Fast
that Dude can Play. Just keeps his arm pumpin'away. Had napkins
in my Ears and they are still ringin' tonight.
Acoustic Set was Really good and lots of fun.
Highlights from that: Oasis of Mara and Bello Horizonte,
and regular stuff:Misserlou(of course) and Esperanza.
Other show goin' on sun.that I missed was Torquays and Tiki Tones
playin' Out front of the "Grove of Anaheim" Near Angels Stadium
before the Beach Boys gig' for some Surf Rider shindig on sun.
afternoon.
Why can't weekends include monday?, to recouperate from all the
runnin'around that happens on your days off.
