Because it is sometimes mentioned here, in this forum, let it be said that the
Jagstang is
not a surf guitar. It is an imitation of Kurt Cobain's mongrified Mustangs and
Jaguars. As
much as I love Nirvana's music, the use of a hot Dimarzio humbucker in the
bridge
position pretty much took Kurt's guitars out of the instro surf tradition and
put them in
the category he helped create, grunge.
That said, I know a cat who gets good surf tone out of his Gretsch Brian Setzer
hollowbody, which isn't a surf guitar either. But I think it has single-coil
P-90s on it.

Setzer's 6120 has what was Gretsch's equivilant to the Gibson
Humbucker. The Filtertron (filter out electronic hum).
I can't comment on the Jag Stang, I haven't played one because they
are so damn ugly.

For an econo Surf sound one might want to try a Squire Jagmaster. The
Jagmasters also come with Humbuckers but you could easily replace
those with Humbucker sized P-90's (around $50-100 for a pair from
Guitar Fetish on ebay, Vintage Vibe also on ebay, or Kent Armstrong)
which can sound fairly Jazzmaster like. Pete at Vintage Vibe actually
custom winds the pickups for you after you order them so you could
probably ask for a Jazzmaster like tone.
Just a thought. I know what it is like to want to rock on a ramen noodle budget.

They're the same quality as anything you'd expect from
Fender Japan, but obviously made for the Cobain
market. Most people I know don't like the Mustang
appointments. I know of two people that use them; one
guy in a now defunct punk band and one of the guitar
players in a
weird/experimental/math/experimental/instro rock band
called Killer Rock From Space. They use Jags,
Jazzmasters and the Jagstang, but they sound nothing
at all like anything we'd listen to. There was
another similar band here that we played on a bill
with called Reading that did a similar thing, and as
much as I wanted to dig it, it was terrible. I think
it's the later MoAM? stamp on Athens.

I play a Gretsch 6118 for surf. It is essentially the same as Setzer's
guitar. It sounds so good for surf. The pickups really don't sound
like humbuckers. When you compare it to a Gibson '57 classic or
whatever they use on the Studio les pauls they are so different. Lots
of twang from a Gretsch.
